Surely for the credibility of the programme there should be a week where contestants only sing & play to a song that they wrote with no backing tapes or any props just a artist performing their own material & playing their own instrument, There's probably a million people in Britain who can sing Karaoke pretty good but not so many who can write & perform a good tune, this is not intentionally having a go at the programme but until a artist starts being their self & not another Stars In Their Eyes style performer they can never be taken seriously.

No no and thrice no. The is such utter poppycock about bloody " credibility" and " writing your own stuff". Many great great singers did not write much of the stuff they sang in the same way that great actors are not diminished by playing Shakespeare. Some few and rare folk write and sing, but that is no reason to exclude those that can sing and not write.

Loads of contemporary successes don't write. Simples.

Because not EVERY singer writes their own songs.

Yes, there are a few exceptions but still...

I'd absolutely love this theme but it would never work well because not all contestants do write their own music so there'd be an unfair advantage to those that do sadly.

Totally disagree, anyone with a half decent voice can sing other people's songs to backing tapes, go to any karaoke night anywhere in Britain & you'll find someone doing that but few of them are considered true artists. Locally in Cardiff every sunday a well respected music venue have a night of young up & coming artists where only original material is allowed & they're a far better standard than anything off X factor, as for credibility do you genuinely think a boyband singing some cheesy Westlife song to backing tapes has as much credibility to a band who have worked their socks off in writing & singing their own material?

Point taken but surely the one who has more to offer musically deserves an advantage?

They all performed their own stuff on MBTM on Sky, it was good. I'd like that, but it would more than likely be a train wreck on XF.

ETA:
I'm also not sure whether it would work on XF with its audience. Its not marketed as a show for people who love or appreciate music. A very large chunk of the audience won't really venture out of the current charts so would probably be a bit bemused at listening to songs they aren't familiar with. Of course that could be miles off the mark, but its an impression I have.

I wouldn't mind a week(s) where there is no theme - contestants can choose any song they like, including one if their own if they choose.

I doubt it will happen, but if one of the big franchises (idol/XF/the voice) started allowing it, it might help them stand out from the competition.

Well clearly it's a great thing if you can write as well as sing and I take your boy and point as personally I'd rather eat glass than listen to Union J or whatever , but I accept others might want to.

But I just do not accept you have to be able to write or somehow it excludes you from singing. They are different skills, otherwise Bernie Taupin would be Elton John ( so to speak - yes I know he writes lyrics).

I loved 'Must Be The Music' great Judges/Acts especially Emmas' Imagination and Pepper & Piano.

Not all successful artists write their own songs.
Just because you can write songs doesn't mean you should.
Considering that they're budding acts, having everyone do their own material is a recipe for disaster.
It actually cheapens the show into a giant televised indie festival (nothing wrong with indie, but the goal of the show is to have commercial success).
You actually lost me at the "credible" crap. That's musical snobbery.
Yes, love Emma.

I wish Emma didn't sign to Gary Barlows label though, he closed down the company while she was half way through her second album which sucks. And the over production on some of the tracks on her album made it loose something that the original versions had. But still a great album I think.

I do believe she is making progress though, she was a few months back but haven't checked her FB in a while; I regularly see gig updates on my feed though.

The show proved that original material can work and that acts are capable of coming up with commercially viable stuff though.

I dunno, possibly. Maybe it will be allowed to happen anyway as Lucy Spraggan sang one of her originals during the live shows last year.

They have plenty of time to get that "advantage" after the show... if they can muster enough fans to last long.
