Anyone recommend a free way to convert mkv to a format which the ps3 will play?

I also use MKVToolNix to remove subs etc from mkv file before using mkv2vob

+1 on mkv2vob
I also use MKVToolNix to remove subs etc from mkv file before using mkv2vob
+2 on this.

MKV2VOB will normally transcode the video so it takes a fraction of the time and there is minimal quality loss.

Re the subs you can define which language you want (or none at all) in the config tab.

I've used it since 2011 to convert MKV files and it does a very good job.
