Yes, I missed the Tess and Claudia team this week. I think Bruce has a scheduled break coming up soon thank goodness.

Being a Londoner by birth yet having lived in Cheshire and worked in several areas around Manchester for a few decades, I think I'm qualified ton spot a "wrong un."
I think over the years Tess had lost her "northern vowel sounds," as has Cilla Black her Scouse accent. Cilla is an extreme example, as she over accentuates the brogue in front of the cameras for effect. With Tess, her native New Mills (a "stones throw from Manchester) accent, I'd suggest has pretty much disappeared, but she revives it for certain words, again for affect. But with her she isn't consistent with it, particularly when she speaks rapidly. That's my observation on it. Scousers tell me Cilla speaks with an old accent, especially the way she says "there" . But she is old now of course. I've never heard a North Derbyshire native say Tess is anything but authentic in her speech. They tend to flatten but not elongate their vowels. Funny enough Natalie Gumede grew up in and around Burnley, a fact her accent, which certainly should feature elongated vowels authentically, conceals. I am just glad BBC English is no longer the norm on TV. |

My barometer for such things is generally a native speaker, and living and working in the region my whole life I'm surrounded by them.

I hadn't really rated her much until she & CW carried the show last week. So yes, agree with OP.

Scousers tell me Cilla speaks with an old accent, especially the way she says "there" . But she is old now of course.......[\QUOTE] I lived and worked in Liverpool for 10 years - dealing with native born scousers week in week out, and I never heard a single one talk like Cilla does. Her pronunciation of words like hair and there is unique to herself...... Normal scousers would say it like "haer" with a drawn out a - not "hurr" like Cilla. Mind you, I knew someone who lived in Denham where Cilla lives, and apparently she is very much the posh lady of the manor - no sign of her affected Scouse accent, downright rude to fans who recognise her, and would only answer to Mrs Willis - not Cilla! To my ear, Tess just sounds like a Northerner who is losing their accent since they moved away.... You can tell she's from oop North, but I'd have difficulty saying exactly where her accent is from. |

Her pronunciation of the word couples has certainly changed since she started on Strictly.

I just can't see how anyone can think Tess is a good presenter at all.
Aside from the strong (and quite odd) pronunciation of certain words, which makes me quite ill, she demands the centre of attention. Observe how she throws her arms wide when err " interviewing" in order to gain the widest attention. I hate her scripted clichéd lines and how she over-emphasises certain parts and plays the somewhat laddette arms akimbo act, while her voice plods along through these weird pronunciations and cliché fests. Particularly if Craig says something particularly cruel, she seems to take great delight in repeating it. It doesn't work when she repeats it. And come on, have you ever, ever heard she say anything remotely interesting or amusing, its all yawn city. Claudia packs in funny original stuff every week! No, she isn't a good presenter, she may look good, but reading lines and over-fawning emotions make me cringe. She was guesting on "Would I lie to you" and she appeared to miss the point. Humourless and paying the game by the rules, with strict adherence. No Tess, its the personality interaction that makes these shows popular, not who gets the most points. But yes Claudia is fabulous, funny, unique and her own lovely person. |

Do you think that Tess practices in front of the mirror, I find it quite helpful sometimes.

I dread to think what you might practice in front of a mirror.
It is quite amazing the variety things that you can practice and improve on in front of a mirror, visualisation is another tool that I often use which can help to improve technique, I'm not sure if Tess does the same as I do though. |

They must've been seriously over-running because a lot of the times they went to her she hardly had any time to chat!
). The BBC have been very generous this year; it's one of their flagship shows and it seems they have relaxed the necessity to have it finished at the exact second it is scheduled to. |

Tess did a good job covering for Bruce and I much prefer her doing that role than the 'Tessanine' role, which I prefer Claudia doing. I'm not sur that she has the charisma to do the main host role full time, but if she was named as Bruce's replacement eventually, then it would still be a marked improvement on what we have now.

I grew up around scousers and Cilla sounds like someone posh from the Wirral does when they're trying to disguise the accent. So 'hair', which is pronounced 'hear' by a scouser, becomes a strangled 'hurr' from Cilla . But then again, she makes no attempt to change words like 'lorra' so she's not trying THAT hard to disguise it. Maybe she does just belong to an older scouse dialect (although like you I've never heard it from a single other older scouser which supports the 'it's phoney' argument), in much the same way as loads of kids now speak that weird nu-patois that didn't exist years ago ("universi-ee" instead of university, etc). Tess is a generic northerner and like you I have no idea which region. Vernon has a much more definable accent. As to Tess, there is no such thing as a "generic Northerner" in the same way that there is no such thing as a "generic Southerner" etc. I know where she is from - North Derbyshire. Her accent is consistent with that. Her husband is from Bolton. Again, his accent is consistent. Tess was once accused on here of having us on because she didn't speak like him. Why would she? They grew up miles apart. |

I'm not saying she hasn't still traces of her original accent. My point is that she over-accentuates certain vowel sounds, like in, "vote" and "judges," I think she makes a conscious effort to do it. But at other times, particularly if she's speaking rapidly, she doesn't.

Perhaps I have misunderstood your original posting on this thread, in particular your reference to "no time for Northern vowel sounds" on the autocue.
I think she uses them just to be "different" but it sounds nearly as false as Cilla Black's over-accentuated Scouse accent. |

Possibly, when she's hurried the over-accentuated northern vowel sounds in words like "vote" and "judges" disappear.

Does Vernon Kay have an accent, never noticed but I come from the same area! That is the point, it is always other people who have accents. |
