As other people have said, other winners have had dance training of some sort. I thought Natalie was brilliant tonight (as did my boyfriend whose only knowledge of dancing is me making him watch Strictly) and I thought she should have got 10s. Previous training or not I look forward to watching her and I hope she wins.

I've never posted in SCD forum before so be gentle on me!”

A gentle welcome!

I really don't enjoy the performances of the John Sergeants and Russell Grants of this world, who are only included for a bit of schadenfreude.
I really don't mind who wins that tatty looking trophy, I just look forward to a bit of entertainment on a Saturday night, there's little of that otherwise on the BBC.”

Amen.

And that's just off the top of my head. I believe I read something about Julien doing tap when younger. It also isn't ruling out those who may have tried dancing very socially, who took lessons knowing they were doing SCD, who dabbled a little when they were children.

To be honest, as long as she's being honest and not claiming she only sat on a chair, I don't care. There is no way to have a level playing field - fitness, performance background, flexibility, musicality, memory for choreography are all factors and were we to preclude any of these, we'll just end up with some very mediocre dances. There is pleasure to be seen in someone improving and learning, but there's also a pleasure to be seen in a beautifully choreographed and performed dance. The joy of SCD is seeing all levels, stages of improvement”

Exactly. This is a show which has a fit, fit, fit, fit! Rugby player, an underwear model, a pop singer, young soap actors against a severely overweight , middle aged actor, a somewhat overweight Tv chef, a middle aged business women, an overweight radio/ tv host, an over weight golfer who is nearly 70 etc. Level playing field it ain't, but I'll enjoy the show regardless.

If the report is correct perhaps it is a tad unfair for her to be on SCD. I have no objection as such to contestants having some previous experience it's how much training/experience they have had and whether they are open about it or not. My issue with DVO last year was the denial about having danced as I feel it did a huge disservice to those performing in shows in how she described it but didn't have an issue with her having experience.

To list herself as highly skilled Natalie will have had to have had a lot of training. Not holding it against her as such as she has been honest but do feel a bit sorry for those who are starting out as complete beginners who may feel they stand no chance because of the high standard that has been set that is not perhaps a fair starting point.”

Well said.

Having looked at her agency CV, she's also "highly skilled" in swimming and yoga, but I don't expect to see her as lead off in the Medley Relay for Team GB at the next world swimming champs or running my local Bikram yoga classes any time soon.

As someone who works with actors and who has an agent herself I know how much bullshit goes on these CVs. Actors always say they are skilled equestrians, for example, and then, when they get a role in a period drama, they rush off for intensive riding lessons. It's all about getting a foot in the door.

Yep. Take a look at the CV of any actor. They're an expert at everything

Natalie's been asked to take part in SCD and she accepted. She's done absolutely nothing wrong.

If she wins it will be because enough viewers decide that excellent dancing is sufficient to capture their vote despite previous training. If she doesn't, it means more viewers want to see less experienced celebrities learning to dance, albeit less well.

Both scenarios are perfectly possible and perfectly valid. I don't know why people are getting their knickers into such a twist. It seems far too early for those who don't agree with celebs having that much prior training to be wringing their hands and going -
"Oh no! She's going to win. She's really, really good. And she's had loads of training. But lots of people don't care. Why don't they care? Why don't they agree with me that this is unfair? Why do they want to vote for someone who is so good already? Why don't they see things from my point of view? Why?"

Some people care about Natalie's past training and won't vote for her.
Some don't and will.
That's the way it works and the way it has always worked.
At least we know the facts from the start this year so can make our own minds up. I spent most of last series actually thinking that DVO really did just sit on a chair (I didn't ).

Which is perfectly understandable, I'm sure it's a really hard competitive profession.

They all do it don't they.

I recall one of the actors during the Les Mis press junkets saying in an interview how he'd been a tad creative with the truth re his ability to ride a horse; and nearly had an awful accident when he actually had to do some riding.

I couldn't care less how much training any of them have had. I like watching them all (well, OK, with some cringey exceptions). Natalie seems to be coming over as, to me at any rate, a sensible non-gushy person.

Urm sorry but that's not true, Mark Benton dances as part of his role as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray.
