It's in mint condition and was given to me today. However they have now forgotten the icloud details and I'm left with a brick.

So was thinking maybe those small mobile phone shops will take it for parts? Or if anyone knows any other way I can fix it.

Thanks

Just so we are clear you were given a phone that was only activated at the most 23 days ago and the person can't remember their log in? Doubtful story sounds like a stolen phone to me. So yep you have a brick.

So I have been given a stolen phone you think? How does one check if it's stolen if it is then someone is going to be mighty happy when they get it back.

BTW thanks for your quick reply

Lol why would someone just "give" you a phone worth over £500 for free?

If it worked they'd have kept it themselfs?

Sorry just trying to understand this scenario

Turn on "find my iphone" it will be in the settings.

Then leave the phone turned on all the time, the owner may try to locate it using the app

And then get done for handling stolen goods..

Great advice.

Just take it to the police station if you suspect anything, and if you don't want to grass the person who gave it to you just tell the police you found it on a park bench and wanted to hand it in.

OP you clearly have a friend with more money than sense. Did it not strike you as odd that a £500 phone that is less than a month old was given to you simply as they forgot the log on?

An alarm bell should have rung like crazy!!!!!

Presume the OP knows they're being tracked?

It will be on already. In fact there is no way of turning it off unless the real owner enters their password.

This all sounds very suspicious to me, anyhow the iCloud details should be the same as the actual owners(sorry I meant your friends) Apple ID and password, so surely they cannot of forgotten that?
Also can't your friend just unlock that security feature by using his/her fingerprint? Or is it that your friend has accidentally lost his/her fingerprints too?

This phone wouldn't be black by any chance would it as Aled Haydn Jones(Ex Chris Moyles Show) has lost his yesterday?

The phone is stolen pure and simple, even if someone did forget their itunes password you have a recovery email or a choice of three security questions to recover it. So you would have to forget your password, recovery email address and the answers to all three of the recovery questions to kill your phone.

As the phone is so new and with a big price tag any genuine owner would head off back to the place of purchase with their receipt.

Can't you just do a factory reset in iTunes?

You can't restore it if Find my iPhone is enabled. And you can't switch off Find my iPhone without the password.

Apparently you can put it in DFU mode when it's in Lost mode, but after restoring you'll be prompted to enter the old Apple ID and password before you can continue.

Correct. You can wipe and restore it but you will need the owner's Apple ID to activate it.

Your advice is that the best way of avoiding legal problems is to litre to the police?
