Good, it's always been my favourite theme and it really does separate the wheat from the chaff imo.
Robbie as guest performer due to his new swing album by any chance? |

Interesting. But bad choice, I think. I don't see the relevance in today's music world, except for a minority of people.

That would be great. Big band week is always a step up from the norm. I don't see how a band playing instruments with the performer is irrelevant in today's world? Some people don't have a clue about music or what they're talking about.

I used to love Big Band week, but I don't know whether it'll still work, it's not really relevant to the music scene today and after all the aim is to find someone who is ready to sell singles now. There are a few acts I think could struggle with a big band theme - Sam C, Abi, Rough Copy, Miss Dynamix. |

That was my first thought when it was announced as week 5.

As for Sam, this could be the cue to get him out. |

Mark Sidaway has confirmed it but he didn't give a week that it would return.

There are a few acts I think could struggle with a big band theme - Sam C, Abi, Rough Copy, Miss Dynamix. I love this theme as i love the songs from that era. I would like them to perform with a live band more often though, the voice can make it work so cant see why xfactor can't. It would get people to take the show more seriously. It can also add extra energy to a performance. I was watching Pinks performance at the itunes festival on youtube (last years performance) and the songs are so much better live, she didn't even need the backing dancers or acrobatics she has on tour either, it was just her and her band and it was amazing. They all bounced off each other well and made the show fun. |

But do many of the themes really have any relevance in the current music world?

Robbie as guest performer due to his new swing album by any chance? I'd prefer to see Buble any day of the week in terms of a guest performer, not least to say, someone to give the singers a masterclass. But, I love Big Band night, mostly as it sorts out the men from the boys and the women from the girls and often throws up a few surprises. It certainly isn't necessarily about the "big," singers having an advantage.. I'm pretty sure that someone like Abi would do well. My all time favourite efforts were in the same season.. Leona Lewis singing "Summertime," and Robert Allen singing "Mr Bojangles." It'd certainly be a test for the groups, as the sort of harmony singing from back then can be challenging... Miss Dynamix look out! ![]() Rich. x |

Barlow, knows his stuff and I'm sure the lads from Rough Copy will deal with the challenges of 40s type harmony.. I actually think, given the right song that Abi will be great.. As for it being "relevant," to the scene today, well, I'd say it's as relevant now as it was a few years back.. And, ever so often, there's a "revival," of this genre and people like Buble keeping it alive.. There was an innovative Jazz singer in Jools the other night, who I was very impressed with. Yep, it's a niche market..but plenty of artists have dabbled with varying degrees of success. Rich. x |

I suspect the main reason it was scrapped in 2010 was because it would have meant One Direction having to sing live and unaccompanied and Cowell was having none of that.

.
I had written to ITV at least 20 times asking for Big Band week to be reinstated instead of all the rubbish themes designed to hide the poorer singers.and their limitations. Big Band Week will show us the true singers. It was the making of Alexandra Burke after Simon told her to stop imitating other singers and just be herself. She rose to the occasion and went on to win. ![]() ![]()

Weirdly (and I'm not her biggest fan, tbh), I can see Tamera absolutely smashing it that week - picture her singing a smoky, sexy love song accompanied by a piano and a string section...
And now I feel very grubby for using the words "smoky" and "sexy" about a 16-year-old girl. |

I'm excited! Tamera and Miss Dynamix (if they're still there) will do really well.
