Does Netflix edit films/shows?

The reason I ask if Netflix edit shows is because I was watching Rainmain with a relative the other day and they commented that a bathtub scene from the start of the movie was missing.

I'd never seen the film before so I'm not sure.

No, they just show whatever they're given by the studios.

Alot of providers do, not through choice but the studios want to encourage extended/enhanced/directors cut sales of bluray/dvd etc.. it also makes it less attractive for piracy

This can happen alot with TV shows. Sometimes Netflix will get the version edited for US TV and not the version released on DVD. Breaking Bad is a strange one where some episodes are edited and some aren't.
