Personally I thought most of the XF acts were rubbish to put it nicely, there were some which shone out, but I can't understand why people think this years selection is so much better. After the poor quality last night I can see a drop off next week, following interest at the beginning.
Also probably not for here but the XF is turning into a drama big style-DEADLOCK last night made me LOL The way the set changed was hilarious and I even heard some of the audience laughing. What's the betting in next week they say at the beginning ''over 11 million of you watched last week-the biggest show of the day by milliooonnnns!!''![]() And I'm surprised they haven't mentioned that they are "Britain's Number One Show" yet! It must be coming soon. The show is fabulously over the top. But they don't take it too seriously, there was one episode of Xtra Factor in particular where Holly just totally mocked the helicopters and constant jumping between cities and hyperbole. The deadlock thing did not work to plan though! (It should have been done as soon as Louis voted). And I just can't take the voiceover seriously because of those E4 adverts! |

With The X Factor doing fantastic business so far, I wonder if American Idol will get better ratings when it returns in 2009 as they have been changes with the introduction of a fourth judge and Nigel Lythgoe has left the show to concentrate on SYTYCD and I believe that Simon Cowell has taken over as executive producer. While AI is still a huge ratings monster for FOX, its ratings have been slipping.

As Simon is a producer on AI now, I wonder if they'll add more sob stories to American Idol- as annoying as they are, they do seem to have a positive effect to the ratings. |

Ohh yeah I remember that. I think he thinks the reason BGT performs well is because of him & his Sandbanks show performed well which just adds to his already huge ego. It would be funny if his show flopped, just to see the look on his face
![]() Simon at least needs to care about the ratings as well as massaging his ego and competitive spirit, Piers just likes the ego boost! |

The first show is usually poor and last night was no different being plagued by sound issues. But there is alot more talent there this year and they have had more focus through bootcamp and judges houses which is possibly why the live shows were so hotly anticipated this year, IMO.

And I just can't take the voiceover seriously because of those E4 adverts! ![]() -Britain's Number One Show! -11 million watched last week! -Bigger than Coronation Street! -The show that's beating SCD on a regular basis! ...and many more ![]() Yeah I think Simon knows it's OTT and he does that purposefully, because it's what many viewers want and it's different to shows like SCD and DOI which are much lighter. It's one of the reasons why it gets a high proportion of 16-34's probably, because it's got a faster pace. And I know what you mean about DEADLOCK and the E4 adverts. It was like everyone was waiting for the Deadlock thing. |

I remember that on the finale Britain's Got More Talent. Someone mentioned how the show had been on everyones lips all week and Piers was putting it down to having him on the show (possibly instead of Louis?). And then Simon and Amanda started taking the pi*s out of Sandbanks, much to Piers annoyance... I was just amazed that either of them watched it in the first place!
Simon at least needs to care about the ratings as well as massaging his ego and competitive spirit, Piers just likes the ego boost! ![]() I vaguely remember him mentioning something about how many people watch the show and Amanda was saying ''well how boring watching you on a sandbank?!''. He also hinted how he would like a position on the XF IIRC ![]() But back to ratings before we get told off

It will be interesting to see what they do with the fourth judge. Feuds, rivalries etc. Will she quit mid series? Simon has pinpointed a few areas that he didn't like about AI. One was the "middle section", where he feels that it drags out. I assume he means through the semi-finals and first live shows. I could see double eliminations and judges vote being talked about there. And he also thought the contestants were too media savvy and they never got to know them. I think that is a sign he'll want some sob stories on there in the early stages. Finally, the most obvious was that certain themes weren't relevant or good enough. Neil Diamond, for example. (Although with XF supposedly doing Mariah Carey week, I'm not sure he can talk) The problem for AI though, is that I think it may have waited too long to change and now has to fight against the tide. I'm not sure how much they can do to turn it around, but it will be interesting to see what they try and how the ratings respond, especially when US ratings seem to be getting worse and worse overall. |

I noticed during America's Got Talent (which Simon is an EP on), that it was more like BGT- it had sob stories, montages such as: "The day has been terrible... but the final person to see the judges is [name]"... cue sob story and person getting through.", etc. It helped with the AGT ratings.
As Simon is a producer on AI now, I wonder if they'll add more sob stories to American Idol- as annoying as they are, they do seem to have a positive effect to the ratings. |

SCD should not be going out so early, but I've finished repeating that line because it probably bores everyone. SCD will never get TXF size ratings because it goes out earlier most weeks and also clashes with it other weeks which brings its ratings down. TXF on the other hand goes out later most weeks and doesn't clash with SCD that often.

![]() I don't really see why the early slot should be a problem. If people want to watch it they'll watch it. Anyway they clash next week which should be interesting. |

![]() I don't really see why the early slot should be a problem. If people want to watch it they'll watch it. In Strictly's first week, it got 43% and 8m. For XF last Sunday, it got 43% (same share) but 9.5m. Obviously, Sunday has far more viewers than Saturday, which helped inflate the XF figure. But anyways, Strictly went out early last year and got figures around 9m. Maybe it's just not that good this year? |

To be fair to cylon6, far more people watch television on Sunday than Saturday. For e.g. there were about 20m watching tv last Saturday between in the 6pm hour. On Sunday, there were 22m.

Anyone brave enough to make a few predictions for tonight? Just for fun
![]() There's the final One Night Only, Peter Kay's new show, Stephen Fry in America, and the return of Frost. An eclectic mix, which is something of a rarity on Sunday nights normally. |

My point still stands. If people want to tune in they'll tune in. We all thought XF would do less well last Sunday because of its slot and it exceeded all our expectations.

True but going out at 5.50 against the football is a stupid idea.
BBC1 has to show something when the football is on. Maybe a Hole in the Wall double bill? ![]() How did it do yesterday anyone know? |

I'd love to know what Strictly was getting when it was going out at 5.45pm in previous years. I recall it thrashing X Factor and getting very good figures.

Impressive ratings by SCD last night against a rather badly-rating England international, didn't expect SCD to win that battle, especially with the early slot and the superb weather. People just don't like to see their England matches on the ITV do they? Hardly surprising of course. (BTW, didn't ITV promise more than 7 minutes of post-match analysis as part of the new package, any chance the FA could rescind the deal and hand the rights back to BBC1?) As for Saturday nights generally, the BBC really should do better. There is no point scheduling Casualty before the end of the first marathon session of TXF - it reduces it down to its core audience and gives whatever filler guff ITV puts on after TXF part 1 a boost because the alternative is the last 20 mins of Casualty. And with only the news and Little Britain repeats to follow on BBC1, there's no need to start Casualty so early - stick it on at 9.25pm, news at 10.15 and MOTD at 10.30. That way SCD and Merlin can run in better, later slots too, and reduce TXF's ratings as well. With TXF bloated to nearly 3 hours a night, and all the associated padding on ITV2 to fill up the rest of TXF obsessives' Saturday nights (shouldn't they get out more and meet people?), ITV can hardly move it much later in the schedule. Last year, the performance shows averaged 9m (42%) - 400,000 more than XF's performance shows. Not really a thrashing.

Go Massa ![]() And he rather gave the game away today with his pained "OH NOOO!!!" when Massa tagged Bourdais and spun. He calmed down a bit though when he rejoined and continued. Just two more races, then good riddance. |
