Oh yes, I agree that there's big shows alongside reality shows like you mentioned. But those type of dramas are quite expensive to make and considering there was a report that New Tricks might get axed due to its cost, its doubtful whether BBC or ITV can make many more of these type of dramas for weeknights.
Where's the money going to come from to make another Doctor Who, or even another Primeval or Merlin? You know, they could make really good dramas, but they might not rate well (like Lost in Austen). So it's a difficult one for the broadcasters. Lets take something into consideration:- Martin Clunes: A Man and His Dogs - Sunday - over 5 million viewers for both shows if I remember The Greatest Cities in the World - Wednesday - around 3 million? Lost in Austen - Wednesday - struggled to keep 4m Midsomer Murders (repeat) - Sunday - averaged over 6 million viewers So I feel it depends on where shows are scheduled more than anything. |

I know that, in November 1999, TOTP2 beat Top of the Pops by about half a million - although that was in a week Pops was on BBC2 because of Children In Need. Normally I think Pops was about a million ahead, I think it was around three million for Pops and two million for TOTP2. The high point of TOTP2 was around the beginning of this decade when it was on every Wednesday, then from 2002 it shuffled around the schedules like crazy, thanks to The Simpsons going daily, and then the constant experiments to find a Simpson replacement.
It's worth remembering that, as well as being shoved opposited Corrie, Pops had some terrible lead-ins when it was on at 7.30. For a few years it was on after Weekend Watchdog, the worst TV programme ever, which used to play out with bands, and I do remember one week Weekend Watchdog finished with, I think, Steps perfoming their new single, followed by Pops where the first band was Steps performing their new single. For most of 2003 it was after Open All Hours, which was no bloody use either. ![]() Another bad lead-in for TOTP came during BBC One's cash-strapped autumn 1996 season: 7.00 Muppets Tonight. 7.25 TOTP. I think they dropped Muppets after a few weeks, but I can't remember what they replaced it with. |

But why did the BBC have to put it on at 7.30 up against Corrie? Why not at 7, because I swear there was a time when it was temporarily moved in that same slot and didn't do well, so why did they do it again, and why did they have to move it from Thursday in the first place? Where they must too arrogant?

In fact, BBC One went Watchdog-crazy for a while: Watchdog, Weekend Watchdog, Watchdog Healthcheck, Watchdog:Value for Money etc. |

They moved Watchdog to Thursdays at 7pm, and it rated well with 6m+ viewers. They had Watchdog spin-offs in the summer too.

-Harry Hill over 1m up on last week to post a series high.
Combined with starting 5 mins later than billed, SCD clearly topped 10m last night, again. Which is fantastic, of course. Quote:
The Comedy Awards will have a big lead-in with no real competition from BBC1. Apart from Strictly it'll be another bad night for BBC1.
Outnumbered is a good show that should go out on a different day, and Casualty needs to be rested I can't tell you the last time I watched it. I don't think Casualty needs to be rested - the reason it is getting it worst ever figures is because it is running midway through a massively over-performing X Factor - and the reason you, and many others, "can't tell you the last time they watched it". It will be back at 7m by Christmas, and beyond. Also worth bearing in mind that the Robin Hood (for which read Merlin), 50 min lottery show and Casualty triumvirate did perfectly good business last year and in previous years against X-Factor. It's just that - for reasons unfathomable - TXF has found a larger audience for whom it has gone hitherto unnoticed for the past few years, bizarrely. If I was BBC Head of Scheduling (and how many times have I said that on this thread...), I would move HITW and SCD on 5 mins and swap Casualty and the Lotto round next week, and the following would have a better chance (actual start time in square brackets): 5.40 [5.43] HITW 6.10 [6.13] SCD [7.25-7.28 Christmas trailers] 7.25 [7.28] Merlin 8.10 [8.13 - as XF finishes] Casualty 9.00 [9.03] Lotto 9.10 [9.13 - as XF results finish] Outnumbered Casualty and Outnumbered then get the jump on the weakest links in ITV1's schedule. Quote:
A final point-it has been a little overlooked that SCD is scoring its highest ratings ever and some of the peaks hugely impressive also.
I'll get my own back tomorrow....

So was that when Watchdog first started? If so, or even if it wasn't, was it doing better than TOTP when it was in the Thurs 7pm slot?
TOTP was getting around 7m(sometimes 8 or 6m) in 1990. Not sure what it was getting by 1995/96, before the move to Fridays. |

On the subject of the X Factor, it's pleasing to know that Cowell is doing his bit to (subliminally) promote the BBC's iPlayer service, with the contest winner taking a dumbed-down karaoke cover of the haunting Hallelujah - currently accompanying the iPlayer trails on the Beeb - to number 1 this Christmas.
But a shame to see ITV again copying something the BBC did first. What would he have chosen if he'd not seen all the iPlayer promos on the Beeb? ![]() (I also admire the brilliance of getting the nation's grannies to shell out for a song by some young starlet that sounds religious but is actually all about shagging...) |

If anyone's interested, anorak that I am, I noticed SCD ran from 18:09 to 19:32-and-30-secs last night, making it six-and-a-half minutes shy of filling its slot.
![]() Or was it 19.31-and-30s? ![]()

![]() Or was it 19.31-and-30s? ![]() ![]() Nearly all of the X Factor Results shows this series have finished 5 minutes early. One performance show finished a full 9 minutes early and brought down the overnight average by 0.4m. But they got timeshifts of around 1m; SCD will see a big time-shift, though probably not as big as 1m. |

That must have made the following programme start early!
![]() Even last night, the main competition was done by about 21.02. For the remaining 13 minutes, it was reading out the phone numbers, some mediocre guest singer and adverts. The 5-minute breakdown shows this with a 22% drop in the audience for the final 5 minutes. Strictly's final 5 minute drop was slight more, with 24%. So it affects both shows pretty much. |

I dunno if I'm a Celebrity (the following programme) actually started that early on that day! ITV packed in loads of adverts and promos if I remember correctly.

If EastEnders averaged 11.73m for its best-rating episode this year (24/3/08), it must have peaked at something better than 11.6m!

Yep, XF ended at 21.10, too, and the ratings for it will have been measured until 21.15. Although, most of the audience stuck around for Miley Cyrus, as 12.3m watched whilst she was on. Between 19.35 and 21.10, XF averaged 12m!

EastEnders had a peak of 13.5m for its episode where saw Tanya go back to dig Max up.
And EE had a peak of 15.2m for the second episode on Christmas Day 2007. But I don't think the burial episode got 13.5m. The only thing I saw on DS was a 15 minute peak at the end of 11.6m. |
