Funnily enough my in-laws both in their 70's love the programme. They watch it whilst making their evening meal. When i was back there last christmas they were showing episodes from the Hugh Scully era so they are about 8-9 years old

how did the first-look home and away and Neighbours do over on Fiver from 6:30?

I don't have last night's figures for those but usually H&A gets 500,000-700,000 while Neighbours gets around 250,000 (overnights). These are approximations based on the most recent official BARB ratings.

Can anyone give me the ratings for Channel 4 News at 7pm and Newsnight (BBC2 10.30pm).

I'm interested in the average ratings for these 2 programmes.

I know Newsnight for last night was reported above but suspect it would always be lower than normal on a Thursday night due to clashing with Question Time on BBC1.

No idea sorry. RZT may be able to help you out though. Figures for current affairs and political shows don't tend to get reported on so you really need to have BARB or know someone who has BARB to find them out.

Channel 4 sales doesn't have the data, I just checked.

Rarely above a million, on 8th Oct it got 0.9m and 0.8m on 11th Sep.

Indeed.

I remember Bad Girls during the summer used to get 9 million during its early series (even as late as 2005 it was getting 5 million during the summer).

That's what Eastenders got last night in October.

I know with digital the viewers are spread more thinly, but even so.

Digital does have a big impact yes. Let's say each digital channel gets 100,000 viewers (obviously those past channel 800 on sky rarely do) that's 20 million on a good night (assuming there are around 200 channels give or take)

If digital TV wasn't about, terrestrial may still have been getting the highs of earlier years.

I also think it's because the soaps are all so over-publicised that there are very few surprises any more - most people would have known what was going to happen to Max, and I can't quite see why the BBC felt the need to construct a one-hour episode around an event lasting a couple of minutes. The big draw for viewers will instead be the "reveal" episode in which we find whodunnit and why.

Thursday 30th October 2008

8:00
CBS Survivor: Gabon 13.14m
ABC Ugly Betty 8.55m
NBC My Name is Earl 6.17m
CW Smallville 4.24m
FOX Kitchen Nightmares (R) 3.64m

8:30
NBC Kath & Kim 5.46m

9:00
CBS CSI 18.64m
ABC Grey’s Anatomy 15.05m
NBC The Office 9.32m
FOX Kitchen Nightmares 3.98m
CW Supernatural 3.53m

9:30
NBC 30 Rock (Season Premiere) 8.53m

10:00
CBS Eleventh Hour 11.48m
NBC ER 9.12m
ABC Life on Mars 8.41m

Highest rated show of the night was CSI with 18.64m.
Lowest rated show of the night was Supernatural with 3.53m.

30 Rock had it's best ever ratings.
My Name is Earl tied for its series low for an original episode.

Well done "er" Getting 9million and beating "Life on Mars" again even though "Mars" had a 15 million lead in from "Greys" on ABC. The funny thing is that cause NBC in such poor shape as a network that "ER" is still one of its highest rated shows each week and does well in the important US Age Demographics.

Eleventh Hour has certainly held up better than Life on Mars since they debuted against each other although LoM is still doing well enough. Another hit for Jerry Bruckheimer (CSI, Without a Trace, Cold Case, The Amazing Race) and CBS.

It will be interesting to see how the Tuesday line-up fairs when American Idol returns in January. NCIS and The Mentalist are both getting 16m-17m viewers just now. But they do have a fairly different audience profile to AI so CBS and FOX might be able to get good ratings without knocking each other down.

Good to see Dead Set rising in the ratings. The average over 4 days is 1m, if you double the first episode (as it was twice as long) then the average would be 1.1m. Tonight will probably get between 600,000 and 700,000. I think the feature length showing tomorrow night could do well, though. Overall, I think E4 will be pleased with its performance.

Well done to Tiny Fey - all that extra Palin work has paid off.

Good to see 30 Rock finally getting some recognition and good on NBC for sticking with it for 2 seasons of not so great viewing figures.

Maybe we should all complain on the points of view message board about how EastEnders gives out too many spoilers, perhaps if it gets featured on the show. They'll take notice and the other soaps may follow suit.

There shouldn't be a total media blackout. I don't mind knowing that there's gonna be a whodunnit involving Max, but knowing how it happens does spoil it.

Exactly Digitalsid - I don't mind hints and spoilers, but the fact that photos of the hit-and-run had been plastered all over the newspapers and sites like DS meant that there was absolutely no element of surprise.

I wonder if EastEnders got knocked down (pardon the pun) quite a bit by finishing at 8.26 last night?

I think Heroes and Villains is a strange choice for the Jonathan Ross slot next Friday. It could only get 2m when it was shown in a 9pm slot!

I wonder what the replacement will be post CIN. Any comedies or other entertainment shows we think could go in the slot?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a few reasons, mostly time-related, I'm probably only going to be found on this thread, ratings game, and soap ratings for a while, so apologies if anyone has left me messages on any other threads!

Late night Hole in The Wall?

They'll probably just fill the 12 weeks with film repeats, haven't heard of anything that could go there really.

I'd either transfer The Graham Norton show from BBC Two or bring the show back with guest presenters and simply call it "Friday Night With...". It could be a perfect opportunity to find a new chatshow host.

What happened to the 7.57 news update last night? I tuned in specifically to see the latest BBC scandal update?

They wouldn't be able to do the guest presenter thing. The BBC employ Ross' production company to make the show (thats who they pay the £18 million - the staff and production that come with Ross) - so if they've suspended him without pay then they must have suspended his production team too. Its not their show to just slot new presenters into.

Most likely to just see films and repeats in that slot, I'm afraid. They could move across Norton, but then they'd only have another slot to fill on BBC Two.

You'd be better off tuning in to the ITV News then, or Sky News.

Funny how ITV and Sky still seem to be leading on this, isn't it....?

Poor night for FIVE and ITV1 last night and a great night for BBC1, but that's a huge drop for Little Dorrit with an EE lead in, but it should have stayed on Sunday really, because at this rate it is going to be below 4m at the end of its 14 part run.
