CBS seem to be enjoying the best of the autumn ratings so far. Its drama line up seems to be the strongest and most consistent of any of the networks. The CSI franchise is huge for them being so consistently strong across so many spin-offs.

ABC doing reasonably well too with their strongest shows still performing well. No end in sight for NBC's woes and Fox hasn't had a great autumn either.

Emmerdale the same episode last year got 7.45m in the officials, so it's down a bit but not much

Interesting night as during ITV's big night they've advertised the following things for the first time:

-Devastation Street-Things won't be the same again-Corrie
-The full version of Britannia High and they've advertised it well imo.
-Britain's Got The Pop Factor...-Perfect targetting the same audience watching the XF. CH4 must have paid a lot for this.

It certainly is a big night. I think its the first time this century that ITV has had the benefit of a live England game outside of a major championship. These games always boosted the following programmes when on BBC1 and I would guess X Factor will get an even greater amount of interest for its first live show, which will hook more people in for the following weeks. I think the credit crunch may be helping XF too-more younger people opting to stay home rather than going out on the town.

Doesn't look like it- there were 22.9m people watching at 8.30pm last night, which is normal(if not more than normal). Just seems like people just didn't bother tuning into Corrie and opted to watch something else. At the start of September, I was thinking that next week would all get over 10m viewers- but it doesn't look like it will.

I suppose they should have promoted it better with some TV ads like Hollyoaks has done. I wouldn't be surprised if those viewers who don't read magazines or visit news agents that often, had any idea that Tony was going to kill Liam. We should have imo seen Tony decide to do it some time last week at least. Perhaps I missed them, but I didn't see any ads on ITV for it till this weekend.

Did this not break Ofcom's rule about having adverts endorsed by personalities appearing in the ad breaks of a programme that also contains that personality? (If you get me!) Because the V/O in that advert is also used in The X Factor (amongst other things).

Fantastic move by Channel 4 there. They have plugged the show to an audience that might not have been aware it was going to be on - it could do well tomorrow.

Yes, the trailer actually makes it look very good.

Many people seem to be down on Britannia High, but I think it'll do much better than people expect. And it was a masterstrolke for Channel 4 to advertise the new Peter Kay show during The X Factor. It even has the style and feel of most of these reality shows from the trailer. Hopefully it'll be good because the Max and Paddy spin off was a real letdown. We could have a real battleground at 8pm on Sunday ina few weeks time with the Strictly results show, Peter Kay and Top Gear!!!

Britain's Got The Pop Factor could do so much better now. C4 must have spent a fortune, because it wasn't just any slot, they were using the ones immediately at the start and end of the break. Instead of trying to plug it to 2 million watching Hollyoaks, they are now promoting it to as many as 11 million.

Britannia High ads looked good as well.

X Factor hit its usual first show problems tonight. Awful sound, styling, song choices and uncomfortable contestants and disappointing performances. It always happens, although I did think this year would be better due to the improved standard. Usually they get it sorted over the next 2 weeks, but it would be good if they could start off well for once!

I cant believe Channel 4 are advertising on Itv with regards to that britains got the pop factor show, desperate times. But for which Channel?

More money for ITV. I don't think they can afford to turn away advertisers somehow.

UK ratings wise, ITV1's Friday Night schedule is doing very well though I think Al Murray needs to move to a different slot and maybe have a US import instead. BBC Two has a decent alternative schedule with each show from 8pm pulling in 2m+. Five's schedule performed well with its male skewed programming while Channel 4 is doing poorly at the moment though Cookalong Live starts in two weeks which could boost its share.

NCIS performs really well considering its in repeat, I expect new episodes will pull in 2.5-3m when it returns in December. If they can find another US import that can pull in 1.5-2m at 10pm after NCIS then Five will easily gained a good share of the Friday Night audience.

And suddenly I wonder how much Channel 4 did pay for that advert. Anyone think ITV see the chance of weakening Strictly's share by advertising Britain's Got Pop Factor...?

I'd say the Heartbeat audience is both reliable and stable, so it shouldn't be affected by the new programme as much.

If anybody is not watching ITV, ITV would by far prefer that that person is watching BBC because if they are watching BBC they are not taking advertising revenue away from ITV.

ITV compete against everyone except the BBC for advertising revenue. And ultimately all that ITV care about is advertising revenue.

Compare two viewing scenarios:

Scenario 1:
BBC1 - 10m
ITV1 - 9m
Other non-ITV commercial channels - 4m

Scenario 2:
BBC1 - 8m
ITV1 - 9m
Other non-ITV commercial channels - 6m

Scenario 1 is better for ITV, even though the headlines would say they lost the ratings battle.

But I can't imagine that ITV would see it as a particular threat to A Touch of Frost or Heartbeat. C4 were after those 16-34 viewers, I think.

ITV aren't in a position to turn away anyone's money.

ITV had to be careful advertising BH, because at the start it looked a bit like Rock Rivals, but when you see the full advert you realise it isn't and hopefully the pre watershed slot will indicate this. Although interestingly Rock Rivals was originally earmarked for an 8pm slot which suggests BH is a better version of Rock Rivals.


Yes. Only a couple of weeks ago Jamie's Ministry Of Food was advertised. Also IIRC Dirty Sexy Money was advertised and usually always a show which is advertised on ITV performs very well for the first episode at least.

Legally they have to carry advertising for other channels, if they pay for it. IIRC Channel 4 or anyone else, cant advertising the precise slot time, but can just say "coming soon" or some such.
