BBC1's Outnumbered is one of the best comedies I've seen on the channel all year, and would work much better spread across a whole week again, or maybe on Friday nights at 9pm

. I am just generally excited by the series, as it's the first time my family have gathered around the telly, because it relates with us. We are middle class but a bit mad. They call it middle England?
Back to the ratings, BBC1 were really solid despite ITV's dominance, with a set of good ratings for Casualty, which always holds up with a loyal audience, and is a credit to the channel by giving variety to Saturday nights, so it's not just clogged up with entertainment. Moreover, Merlin is a really good show and creates appetite for event family drama on Saturday nights, which will definitely affect the future for Saturday night television, which BBC1 gets right despite their limitations on this night in comparison to ITV1.
I feel ITV will see an improvement on Saturday nights next year, because this autumn has been brilliant in settling down with a loyal audience on Saturday nights with a mix of comedy, variety, talent and some gameshows. Harry Hill is solid, and will perform even better when Strictly has finished. It's just a good show and is above the 5 million zone. But I am surprised at the viewers of 'We are Most Amused', as it brings comedy together, and I think ITV should air 'For One Night Only' in the slot between X Factors in future, if they continue with the shows.
In conclusion, Saturday nights are redeeming themselves as the centrepoint of the week, with the most innovation for shows which base themselves around the popular talent shows. This is where Doctor Who, Primeval and Merlin have established themselves, as well as other shows that bring back the gameshow nostalgia. It has become a BBC1 v ITV1 zone, and that makes ratings very interesting & competetive.
Whereas on weekdays, Channel 4 and Five can pick up over 2/3 million viewers in primetime 9pm slots, as well as BBC Three & Four, ITV2, 3 & 4, E4 and More 4 get in on the act and attract a hand of viewers between them. This means, BBC1 and especially ITV1 need to work hard to create an 'elite' image on weeknights, and this is going to be hard. The digital (r)evolution has affected the big two on weekdays, but as they limit their programming on Saturday & Sunday, gives them a chance to grow on these days.
And an apology for the lengthy post.
