I think ITV could have easily put a new ep of Midsomer or Frost into the 9pm slot if they wished. BBC's charitee shows now include CiN, Comic Relief, Sports Relief, SCD, the save the planet show Live Aid,Diana Aid,,,,,

One could think the BBC goes after these big charitee events for ratings
To be fair Comic Relief and Sport Relief come as one entity, either one or the other. Diana and World Aid were both one offs.

Anyway what ever happend to Soccer Aid or the Mandela concert that never really caught on?

The England v Germany game should make the Top 30 this week.

If ITV wanted to be cynical (not that they ever would) the couls show a different special every week between X Factor shows. This would get another 10 shows into the Top 40

Interesting that Moving Wallpaper has a halved commission for its second series. More grist to the mill of my feelings it was only re-commissioned out of pride.

@rzt,

Don't you think it would be interesting to multiply each show by the length of time it was on!!!!! Methinks CiN might just be top!

Seems we can knock 624k off Stephen Fry's figures:

Thats not really fair unless we do that with every show BBC1 Scotland moves, which is a lot of programming.

Plus we dont have the ratings Stephen Fry got at 10.30pm.

And its still an accurate representation of the amount of people watching BBC1 at 9pm.

True.

I didn't mean it in a nasty way. I just thought it was an interesting breakdown of the figures.

ITV should really move BH to another timeslot, instead of keeping it out of pride. It's rating awfully..
Oh, I don't know. I think it's rating wonderfully...

I thought you were being silly with your "more and more BBC charity events" attack. Now you've proved it.

Can someone fill in the remaining blanks in the Top 40 below....?

It really is a travesty that a lightweight, saccharine copycat show should have rated so much better than the original and classier product. I do hope SCD can put this injustice right on 20th December!

Ditto but Brucie's not much better TBH. He's a moron of the highest order and should be banned from British television. I dont care how old he is, he ruins my favourite TV show.

Sorry.

Oh god we're not starting this old chestnut of 'one channel is far superior to the other' again are we?

Both BBC and ITV have their good points. Both have their bad points. I feel slightly more sympathetic towards ITV1 at the moment because half decent programming they air struggle while rubbish on BBC1 gets good ratings. But that's not to say BBC1 don't do good programming.

Can't we just lay the stupid pro/anti tirades to rest for once and for all?

I've collated the top 10s for the main 2 channels.

I prefer to view them this way, and it's a good overview of performance.

BBC1:

1 EASTENDERS - 11.73m
2 DOCTOR WHO - 10.57m
3 ANTIQUES ROADSHOW - 10.07m ***Overnight
4 STRICTLY COME DANCING - 9.95m
5 CHILDREN IN NEED 2008 - 9.66m ***Overnight
6 NEW TRICKS - 9.36m
7 THE APPRENTICE - 9.29m
8 MATCH OF THE DAY LIVE: England v Switzerland - 9.18m
9 EURO 2008: MATCH OF THE DAY LIVE: Germany v Spain - 8.84m
10 WIMBLEDON 2008 - 8.80m

ITV1:

1 BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT - 13.88m
2 CORONATION STREET - 13.02m
3 DANCING ON ICE - 12.08m
4 THE X FACTOR - 11.65m
5 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Man Utd v Chelsea - 10.05m
6 BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX - 9.08m
7 LEWIS - 8.90m
8 I'M A CELEBRITY, GET ME OUT OF HERE! - 8.89m ***Overnight
9 EMMERDALE - 8.85m
10 WILD AT HEART - 8.59m

Some thoughts:

- although ITV has the strongest top 3, BBC1's mid-table showing is stronger and ITV's 10th-rated show comes in lower than BBC1's

- apart from Lewis, and 2 bought-in sporting events, there's little real quality in ITV's top shows, it's all lowest-common denominator tat. Contrast with the quality and middle-brow programming in BBC1's top 10, EastEnders aside. ITV1 is clearly the Asda to BBC1's Sainsbury's.

- the best may still be to come for BBC1 - it should get 12m or so for SCD. EE might get 12-13m for its Christmas Day episode. Doctor Who's Xmas showing should see its ratings increase (unless it's actually called "Doctor Who: The Next Doctor", in which case BARB will presumably include Doctor Who twice...? ). Wallace & Gromit's new adventure should get 10m. The Royle Family might get 10m too on Christmas Day. The Royal Variety will rate well, depending what day it is shown. Jonathan Creek could get 9m. CIN might just get to 10m in the officials (but I doubt it). What else has ITV got to look forward to in 2008, other than TXF possibly bettering its 11.65m?

Im glad DOI rates better.. it a better show that appeals to more people!

''ITV1 is clearly the Asda to BBC1's Sainsbury's'' I dont think ITV cares as long as its 'tat' gets more viewers...

DOI is ok, it because ITV give it that cheap feel, lets it down.

There's money to be made from so called low common denominator tat, just ask Asda

So this thread isn't just ratings now?, it's also about so called quality as well? I'll remember this next time BBC1 wins the slot with Holby or Traffic Cops

To be honest I think SCD feels cheaper then Dancing On Ice. Have you seen the hard back chairs the judges sit on? And they use paddles while Dancing On Ice use electronic scoring. The whole set is very TV-ish. Looks glitzy, but is really a flatpack from IKEA.

And before you say anything I love SCD.
