Oh, there will always a worse bunch somewhere! I assume those rejected for Only Connect end up finding an extra couple of pals and going on Eggheads!
Continuation of: Only Connect (BBC4)

Popular enough show to get a split thread
It's only taken 8 series

Bit easy for the bakers, I thought -- that hole question! The other team said salad dressing, not sure why Victoria refused it, or the colours one.

Got all the missing vowels for Operation

For the colours one the relevant answer was that the colour in the name was not representative of the object, eg the green card being white...they had simply said that they all had colours in the name, which was technically true but not in the spirit of the game.

Salad dressing was a bit unfair I thought but perhaps confused by the fact that two of the team were giving different answers, salad and salad dressing...however the last answer given was salad dressing before she then asked them to choose, which they did incorrectly, rather than just accepting that last answer.

Was the sequence question involving holes the easiest question there has ever been on Only Connect? I know questions get harder as the tournament progresses but really...

I agree, that was a very harsh decision, especially when they did say dressings a number of times - VC has let contestants get away with much more vague / waffly answers on the wall in the past. Although, she did give them the "wave" question when she perhaps shouldn't, so maybe that was their one chance?

I still think they're sneaking in these stupid questions as a way of preparing us for the quality of show we'll get after davidbod has left

There were very lucky with the 'wave' answer and I suspect they could have expanded it to the correct answer if pushed. One person seemed to be saying salad and another dressing, she has to get an answer from the team captain so they were unlucky that he chose the wrong one. It seems reasonable to be lenient early in the programme but only once.

I can imagine some teams not believing that holes was the right answer, however obvious, and wasting time trying to find something obscure. It also gives a brave team the chance to go after one clue and get a high score.

I got the holes one on pic two (bowling ball), the wrong colour names in two and sine wave on the first clue (but in real life, I'd have waited for the second clue to be sure). Beating the teams all three times.

I think it is definitely getting easier. I'm usually lucky to get any after 3 clues, and that 's with listening to the teams' ideas!

Round 2 was a lot easier than usual. West Yorkshire ... Greater London also straightforward.

I thought her going on about Joplin being so far away from the answer was unfair because I didn't know the ONJ represented the UK.
I've only known her as an Aussie and didn't know she was born in the UK, so that would have thrown me off.

The word 'salad dressing' came out of his mouth and the answer on screen was 'salad dressing'.

Also, is the pronunciation of Don Quixote down to the individuals preference?

I always thought it was ki-HO-teh

They were given a chance to put forward their full and final answer, and went for the wrong one. Tough.

Americans tend to use that version. The traditional English education system way of saying it is to use the -x-. This is because it's felt slightly spurious to try to attempt a cod Spanish accent, in the same way that you wouldn't pronounce the French capital as "Par-ee".

Neither version is wrong but the -x- version is the one we (and University Challenge) use.

I must admit that I'd never even heard of Prima Donna, but with ONJ and Mary Hopkin in the list, the connection was likely to have something to do with Middle of the Road music. Janis Joplin was spectacularly far away from the answer as, even if she had been eligible to represent the UK, I very much doubt she'd have been picked!

The one comment I did think was unfair was the one about the misnamed colours when VC-M said she couldn't accept their answer "partly because there's already been a mistake in your gloss of the answers", referring to the fact they thought the first picture was a black rhino instead of a white rhino. The simple fact is that both types of rhinos are misnamed, so it didn't really matter which one they thought it was.
