Strange mixture last night, she seemed very strict on the interpretation of two answers early in the programme then very lenient a couple of times later on.

Can someone please explain the jury verdict connection

I got the fact they were all verdicts that can be made by juries but surely there was something more than that...along the lines of "verdicts made by juries which would not result in transportation or execution".

It just seemed a bit lame to me

Got the place names in Cornwall on the connecting wall very quickly last night but then I would be ashamed if I hadn't!

That question about the prime minister anagrams was way too easy, they could have made it harder by not having the year in the clue.

I was screaming the Trainspotting answer at the TV, during the Wall round.

Me too.

I know everyone has different cultural references but that was the most obvious one to me.

That was one where I thought she might have prompted them to try again because they were in the right area with their answer.

I missed the 8teen, 9teen sequence explanation?

They are 'teen' words were (number minus ten) is in the teen word. So for example 'fourteen' contains 'four' and 'nineteen' contains 'nine' but 'fifteen' does not contain 'five'.

I guess if they'd put the whole words on the screen it would've been really obvious, so they obfuscated it a bit.

To do with the words, where the 3-9 words keep their original spelling when teen is added. So fourteen, sixteen, seventeen and nineteen fit the sequence, thirteen, fifteen and eighteen don't (eighteen drops a t).

Had I been one of the Channel Islanders I would definitely have challenged when their answer wasn't allowed. They had a perfectly valid sequence - it wasn't the one the question setters had intended, but it followed perfectly well from the previous three answers. They specifically gave their answer as "8EEN" rather than "8TEEN". Their sequence - numbers that contain other numbers - should have been allowed.

it was an ambiguous question

4teen fourteen
6teen sixteen
7teen seventeen

were the clues. On the first clue, i guessed 8teen, which was a correct answer and i should have 5 points. However, Only connect question setters screwed up yet again.

8teen eighteen is a correct answer, as fifteen doesnt contain the word "five". That was my reasoning, and it was perfectly valid as a sequence and should have been accepted as an answer from the team.

I got three 5 point questions, and one taken away from the above question. It was quite easy this evening.

Yeah, me too. Very surprised they didnt know that.
The Prime Minister anagrams question was way too easy, That Great Charmer should probably have been the last clue as thats very well known, imo.

I did chuckle at I Am Tory Plan B for Tony Blair MP though

That was in Private Eye years ago. Favourite ever MP anagram was Virginnia Bottomley =I'm an evil Tory bigot

In the vowels round "Cartoon dogs and their owners" - pretty sure Santa's Little Helper was just Bart's dog

Surely "Lock Penis In Car" is much more memorable and appropriate

No - 8teen would be eightteen, so NOT a correct answer.

Wait.. You knew the sequence would ignore Fifteen BEFORE they revealed it, and worked out that because Fifteen wasn't included, then 8teen must be the right answer...
Despite EIGHTTEEN not being correct.

So you didn't get 5 points, because you got the answer wrong!

I agree that Only Connect made an error with the teen question, which, given there was only one point difference in the final scores, is serious.

After the first three elements of the sequence had been shown, we debated whether 8een or 9teen was the answer being sought, and decided that "the first positive integers whose names contain another integer" was much more Only Connect than "teens that consist of a number plus the word teen with no overlap" which is rather an inelegant category. So we would have been adjudged wrong too.

I think they've erred badly here in not allowing any logical and sensible sequence.

There has been an increasing number of sloppy questions over the past three series. Has the question-setting team changed?
