Is the wall supposed to have a unique solution? It didn't, this time. Although I suppose that that is a risk when you use the word "Smith".

Explain? The wall must have a unique solution otherwise it's unfair.

The TOTP question was more suited to an odd one out in HIGNFY with 3 miming when they shouldn't be and 1 not miming when they should. Victoria's silent chatting away just didn't happen as All About Eve just sat waiting for the music to start with an occasional 'what's happening' expression before picking the track up when they finally heard it. It was a very poor 'connection'.

Were the music duos meant to be related ?

The White Stripes were husband and wife , I think.

It would have been hard for Les Gray's vent dummy to sing live.

I got five points on that!
(Mind you, it was a University Challenge question).

The connection was 'miming on TOTP'. The clues were perpetrators of miming (in specific situations). The fourth perpetrator was 'nobody' which doesn't vary from the connection at all. Nobody was miming, is exactly the same as somebody was miming in the context. The connection is completely sound. Unless I mean soundless?

It would, especially considering it only had a speaking part.

The answers Smith and Wesley can be swapped between the categories "founders of Christian movements" (Joseph Smith, the answer given in the show, and John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church) and "female novelists" (Mary Wesley, the answer given in the show, and Zadie Smith.)
There may be many female novelists called Smith, but Zadie Smith is famous, and therefore an entirely reasonable answer.

Blimey, good spot. That's very naughty then. Do take the time to inform the powers that be cos that really shouldn't be happening.

I think this thread has had a bit of a clean-up, and one of my posts on this has gone astray, but I found the connection to be a little off.

Given that miming was the norm on TOTP, just 'miming' isn't much of a connection. In the first three, people were deliberately subverting or mocking the miming culture by either miming things that they didn't do on the record or getting a dummy to do it. All About Eve was just a case of 'miming gone wrong'.

If I recall, the lead singer deliberately didn't sing/mime in protest as she couldn't hear the track properly. She made a conscious decision to sit there and do nothing to make a point.

No. There was no audio in the studio, so Julianne Regan was sat there, unaware that the music was playing out to the nation whilst she sat there motionless. It was definitely a cock-up rather than any sort of protest.

They came back the week after to do it properly

It's a bit like Owen Paul on Pebble Mill

They must get told to not move if they can't hear any audio in a 'live' setting

Disappointing to hear it's being moved to Fridays, especially given that BBC NI tend to move Mastermind around the schedule already due to Ulster Rugby coverage.

Weird decision altogether when you have an identifiable clever clogs hour. And for Island Parish? How does that fit?

I'm anticipating celebrity team captains next....

Seriously, though I like a weeknight treat, and this was it. I know I can record it and watch it whenever I like, but it doesn't feel the same. I'm still of an age where I like schedules.

Doesn't feel the same to me either, I go to an exercise class on a Monday night, and Only Connect was the treat I looked forward to after coming home from the class. I don't do anything on Friday night other than watch TV.

It would have been ridiculously harsh not to allow it after they got as far as brothers and betrayals.

Specifically, the connection was murder.
Were they were just looking for betrayal, they could have used Joseph, for example.
Personally I believe "betrayal" to too gentle a word for murder.

How is what they could have done relevant to anything? It was too close to the answer not to be given the point. Referee's decision is final.
