Never watched this before but it's quite entertaining. Strikes me more of a bbc2 6pm show. Also feel V's quips need a studio audience to groan along knowingly.”

And for a twist, standing around in the background.

I was surprised that she gave them what seemed to me to be a much more obscure definition since the fishermen's/sailor's sweater is the original Guernsey and has been around for hundreds of years.

Maybe it was to avoid confusion with a Jersey? They’re similar garments, and having two separate and distinct definitions would ease the explanation somewhat.

Interestingly enough, a 'sark' is also a garment, although not named for the channel island.

Should the thread title be changed to BBC2?

It deals with ye olden days of BBC 4 mostly until a new one is made. Almost a year old now.

Similar garments ?

All my Jerseys have arms, the thing about aussie rules footie tops is the complete lack of arms.

A Jersey and a Guernsey are both knitted jumpers with totally different patterns. Note the capital letters for for jumpers/sweaters in those patterns.

The Guernsey jumper has been around since the 16th century. The Austalian guernsey shirt for football is modern by comparison.

Tops worn by sportsmen such as cycling and soccer are also called jerseys.

Then there's the Guernsey cow which produces very rich milk.

In 19th century Australia close fitting Guernseys were worn by gold miners - who maybe had a break playing football ...

I meant in their original form, they are both knitted jumpers. Distinguishing between a Jersey (a knitted jumper) and a Guernsey (Aussie rules clothing) might have clarified it somewhat.

I'll be honest, I could be (and probably am) totally wrong on that point, it was just a guess as to why the Aussie Rules definition was given instead of the knitted jumper definition for Guernsey.

I suspect she used the Aussie Rules definition simply because it's the kind of weird fact that Only Connect viewers might find interesting.

Not the most flattering of outfits for VCM tonight. She forgot to wear her spanx.

Another comfortable victory again.

Viccy being a bit snooty about the teams not knowing what a Diatonic Scale was.

Fair play to the Wandering Minstrels.

It takes some doing to be up against a load of middle aged Dr Who fans and STILL look the least likely team to ever get laid.

But the Wandering Minstrels were supposedly music fans so they shoud at least have heard of it even if they didn't know exactly what it was. You're right though, VCM does need to remember she has the answers in front of her and not behave like she knew it all anyway.

First time I've watched the whole of this. I thought the connections might be as annoyingly obscure as on Round Britain Quiz. I enjoyed it, especially after University Challenge. It makes a rare hour of fairly intellectual quizzery.

I think it was just a bit of teasing especially with one team claiming to be interested in music.

I got that impression too, I liked their response about not really needing any musical talent for G&S; consumption of gin being more important.

I enjoyed the retort from the other team that in that case they should have got tonic.

I'm still trying to get my head around the idea of Dr Who babies (as a consequence of the dating forum).

One wonders if the Doctor Who babies are given names such as Rose or Sarah-Jane and possibly a few Clara's these days.

A friend of mine swears he once saw three kids running around a supermarket causing trouble, and their harassed mother yelling out, "Tegan, Nyssa, Adric, come here NOW!"
