"9th: Run" was my first 5 pointer in weeks, I'm slipping.

Also I was convinced the Big 5 sequence was about Eurovision. I still am.

How handsome is David Simons (coders captain). Ding dong as leslie Phillips would say

Got the Great Train Robbers one and would have staked my life savings on what turned out to be the Rugby Captain's connection was really the colours and numbers of the 5 Thunderbirds.

5 was the space station
4 the underwater one
3 The space rescue rocket
2 transporter [ my favourite ]
1 high speed rocket plane

That would make a great sequence question if it hasn't already been one, but I'm afraid it doesn't match the colours as well we you remember...

http://i.ytimg.com/vi/X1faTFQ-5LQ/hq.../hqdefault.jpg

Sequence was

5 - green on yellow (SA), Thunderbird 5 was there space station but it was pretty much just silver and bronze
4 - black on white (ENG), Thunderbird 4 was yellow and... pink?
2 - Yellow on green - (AUS), Thunderbird 2 was yellow on green so fair enough
7 - White on Black (NZ), As far as I know there was never a Thunderbird 7.

As an aside, you may like to know Thunderbirds is being remade and, while the obvious initial reaction is abject horror, the ships actually do look quite like the original models although Thunderbird 2 isn't quite as rounded.

Yours, someone whose childhood was dominated by Thunderbirds dinky toys and who desperately wishes he'd kept some of them .

Yeah, what is the point in questions like that?

The missibg vowels round descended into yet more 'look how clever and funny the question setters are' chaos.

Didn't someone think out aloud about sports team shirts? I don't follow sport but white number on black background makes me think of the All Blacks so I might have made a guess at rugby.

What, the Moons and Suns thing? That genuinely was clever and funny.

Aye me too. I had a metallic blue Thunderbird 2 as well. I seemed to have had the full set of Gerry Anderson toys, including all the Spectrum vehicles, S.H.A.D.O spaceship, truck and gold car.

What's the point of any questions in a quiz show? To test people's knowledge on a variety of subjects!

I spotted the connection, but couldn't remember the number of the last Captain. A couple of friends got it on the second clue ... but none of us would have got the Dr. Who one in a hundred years!

It's simply to test lateral and logical thinking. "Moons" could be actual moons or people with the name Moon. What's the problem?

Is it an age thing that some of us immediately got the great train robbers? The two teams are very young compared to me.

When I saw Bob Welch I was thinking of the ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist and was looking for a musical link. I'm old enough to remember the Great Train Robbery too

That question about the lineage of Jesus, did I understand correctly that it varies according to which gospel you read?

And each question will be easy for some people and impossible for others.

Perhaps but it was the anniversary last year (when the programme would have been recorded) with a number of articles and TV programmes about the robbery.

I suppose most questions can be 'an age thing'

Yes it does. Only Matthew & Luke open with the "begats". Matthew goes from Abraham and Luke goes all the way back to when God begat Adam.

It is a central argument when debating* just how literally you take wording of the Bible when they two gospels can't even agree on what Jesus' gandpappy was called.

Conversely the 77 generation from God begat Adam up to Joseph begetting Jesus is part of creationists age of the planet/universe.

(* and this isn't the right place to open that debate)

I'm no theologian, but isn't it one of the absolute central tenets of Christianity that Joseph didn't beget Jesus?

Totally agree. I thought old Jesus didn't have a family tree as he was directly 'begat' by God? Very strange.

Good point. That last step in the chain was a little more complex than a good old fashioned begetting.

Matthew says "and Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ" but I think Luke refers to Jesus as "the son, so it was thought, of Joseph" (Matthew comes down the chain with the begats, and Luke goes up the chain with a lot of "..the son of..."s)

Exactly. It always amuses me when people moan about questions being "unfair" because they don't know the answer, or "too easy" because they happen to know a lot about that particular subject!

Thanks, there's plenty threads in GD for that.

The connection for all of your comments is that you get annoyed by questions you don't know the answer to.

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of muscians who were brought in to replace a band member who was ill, Bob Welch did join Mac when Danny Kirwan { or Peter Green ? ] went a bit AWOL, and somepne called White replaced Ringo on a tour when Starr was under the weather.

But then the name Bruce Reynolds came up.

I agree with what they say on Pointless. Age is never an excuse for not knowing something.

I remember the Great Train Robbery happening, but when it was big news no one knew who had done it, for obvious reasons. So I don't know the names of the gang simply because I'm old enough.
