I think there have been some problems with some questions on the show.
It's not just if you didn't know the answer. When you find out the answer you can look through the connections and answer and consider whether it's a decent question or the questions setters being self satisfied with themselves for coming up with it.
Also there are answers like Great Train Robbers that I would have got on the final clue just because I had no other alternative answers.
Some might have avoided the answer because it's one of those that seem too obvious.

Teams attempts on the 4 by 4 squares round often seem so random and haphazard.
Over heard one saying "shall we start guessing now?" but yet they often waste time not actually pressing alternatives, when they haven;t actually got a clue.

Just remembered something that surprised and annoyed me from last night.
When the team did the wall one player suggested Professors and then another said "Hawkins is a professor".
Now, I don't believe he said Stephen, but did he mean Stephen Hawking?
It's annoying enough when people add an S to his name but Hawkins!!!
Apologies if he actually meant a Professor Hawkins. I'll admit that I don't know of a famous Professor Hawkins but it's not unlikely there is one.
Is Professor Robert Hawkins well known enough to pop into your head during a quiz?

As was shown on the BBC programme about the Great Train Robbery, the police started to catch up with people fairly quickly after the robbery and I am sure names were publicised of other people who they were looking for.

I was thinking the same. The Treasure Island names weren't even considered. It shows what can happen when you get side-tracked by someone else's certainty about something. Even to the point of not asking what Prof Hawkins he meant. They wasted their last three attempts trying to find four professors who weren't there.
They were poor over the whole quiz.

The point I was making was the names weren't the big story at the time of the robbery so weren't memorable. Normally with such memorable events the whole thing is news at the time. With the GTR, the crime itself was huge news but other details came out in dribs and drabs afterwards. After the robbery the news was mainly about the police trying to find where the gang had gone after the raid. It was only after that was found that they had clues to who they were looking for. Apparently photos of the suspects were shown on TV but a long list of suspects is less memorable long term than one or two.
So what sticks in my mind from living through it is the crime itself and the hunt for the farm they met at aftwerwards. The other details didn't stick in the mind so well as they came out later.

The attempted extradition of Ronnie Biggs from Brazil was well publicised and a big thing was made of it 2013 on the 50h anniversary. Even down to the fact that they played Monopoly with real money at Leatherslade Farm. So even if the contestants weren't around at the time, I'd have thought they would have been aware of the anniversary publicity and TV programmes, although the haul of probably wouldn't have had the impact in 2013 than it did in 1963, less than £3million then being unimpressive compared with the equivalent of about £48million it would have been in 2013.

I was around at the time of the robbery, and I, like the poster you quote, did not recognise any of the names in the clue as the train robbers except for Biggs.

No I don't, there are lots of areas I know nothing/little about including Dr Who and Jesus.
But there was so much publicity on the 50th anniversary, as well as the film Buster starring Phil Collins of Genesis - that covers news, documentaries, film and music - that I was surprised its had not registered with any of the six participants in one of those areas even when Ronnie Biggs name came up. There was also a BBC drama about it. A single topic like Dr Who is one thing, but this was covered by so many different areas that I'd have thought one of them would have had an idea.
I didn't recognise the first two name to start with, but Bruce Reynolds rang a bell and Ronnie Biggs, who was in the news on many occasions clinched it.
I don't want to start an age old argument but..... I got the Doctor Who connection but I am not an avid fan and haven't watched the last couple of series and therefore would not have been able to guess what the first words of the new doctor were, however, I know that was the connection.
I wonder if I made something up and then gave the connection whether I would get the point?!

That applies to any question, you can say the same of the Jesus one or Doctor Who one.

Like many other questions, they put a slightly ambiguous clue in early to give someone a chance of maximum points but also catch out someone choosing the wrong answer. Then keep the most obvious until last.

Yes...I got these answers because I knew them. I don't post on here saying that everyone surely knows everything about Doctor Who because it is shown on TV trailers and quoted in the paper all the time so how can they avoid it etc. Obviously, some people aren't interested and don't know. Me, for one.
If someone avoids the publicity around the Train Robbery anniversary because they are not interested for whatever reason, why is it so difficult for some posters to understand?

And on Miilionaire questions were ranked so that the higher the value of the question, the less people were likely to know the answer. Are the producers of OC supposed to test out all their questions on a sample audience and only put through ones that are answered correctly by x% of people?
So what if some questions are "harder" than others? That's the nature of all quizzes/

Not at all. I'm not that naive or arrogant.
I don't know the answer to over 90% of the questions on the show, so there would be a lot of questions for me to get annoyed with if that was the criteria.
The rugby union one was absolutely ludicrous as there are just far too many possible sequences that there is no way in the time scale involved that you'd arrive at the connection. Even rugby union fans - which are few and far between - would struggle to get anywhere near the answer. That's surely an indication that a question is too difficult.
One of the main problems with that question is that the first two clues also corresponded quite reasonably to the number of Football World Cups Brazil had won and the number of World Cups Germany had won - as the team themselves seemed to notice - so that immediately throws you off down the wrong track. There just isn't enough time involved to work out what the numbers correspond to, the next team, next captain and his number.
There is a quiz program on Sky One called The Fanatics where contestants answer on their specialist subject. This would have been a valid question to give a rugby union fan several minutes to solve on a show like that. However, to give this as a general knowledge quiz question with 30 seconds (is that the correct time?) to solve, is just ludicrous - as Victoria herself highlighted when she said she had agreed to give the question setter £10 if anyone got this.
I'm a sports fan and could have named the last four countries to win the Rugby Union World Cup - which is more starting knowledge than 95% of the population could bring to this question - yet I certainly couldn't get anywhere near to naming the captains or knowing their numbers.
I stand by my previous comment, I don't see the point in a question that 1 in 10,000 people could answer given 5 or 10 minutes but which barely anyone in the country would get in the 30 seconds given to the teams. What does that achieve or in what way is that question constructive to the outcome of the show?
My problem with this question has nothing whatsoever to do with whether I personally know the answer or not.

That Chris Tarrant quote really applies to a more standard question/answer type quiz show where you either know the answer or you don't. It isn't really applicable to Only Connect.
On this show it's more about working out a connection which sometimes involves knowing a specific piece of knowledge about which they are asking.
The question setters don't necessarily need to test the questions on people - they should be intelligent enough to know which questions are reasonably solvable in 30 seconds and which aren't. I could spot that the rugby question wasn't. Victoria could spot that. Why could the question setters not spot that?
This isn't a show where one person/team competes to win money (effectively playing against the question setters) for example Who Wants to Be a Millionaire or The Million Pound Drop. This is a show where two teams compete against each other. So, if the question setters come up with a ridiculous question which neither team can reasonably be expected to solve in 30 seconds, what does that achieve? It contributes nothing towards the outcome of the show whatsoever.

The white number on black background only appeared in the answer though didn't it? (ie the 4th picture in the sequence)
The first two clues, if you're going to think on a sports theme would more reasonably lead you towards Football World Cup wins, it's only on the third clue that it becomes obvious this isn't the sequence. Even then, the very least they could have done was printed the numbers on t-shirt shapes to suggest this was a sports question, as there could have been many possible sequences that weren't related to sport as well.
Just a really poor display all round from the question setters.

While they're trying to be clever by being vague and putting 'Moons' so it covers both celestial moons and famous people with the surname Moon, it kind of makes the question fall down. I could buzz in and say Kath Moon or any made up name for any of the questions and it becomes valid because they haven't specified 'FAMOUS people called Moon.' Just set some normal questions and stop trying to be smart.

I think most people understand that quiz show questions will relate to famous people! According to your logic, the answer to the question "Who said 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind'?" could be "My neighbour!" as strictly speaking, that could be correct.
The category was "Moons" so didn't exclude famous people called Moon. It's lateral thinking.
Were you equally irritated by the category (in episode 16) "Apple products" which included iPod Touch, MacBook Air, Cider and Toffee Apple? If so, did you just assume it could only relate to the company or the fruit, but not both?

Sorry thought it was a first round question.
I watched the documentaries about the Great Train Robbery and could only name Ronnie Biggs. It would still have made a good guess though.
