If you did your paintings on the inside of the roof they'd be obscured by the ceiling.

We all did in my house! I bet David Mitchell has heard it a few hundred times.

Mmmm, that'll keep me up all night now.

I like these teasers, like what colour does a Smurf go when it's being throttled ?

The roof of the Pantheon is solid concrete, as are many modern buildings, so in those cases the ceiling and the roof are one and the same.

Almost worthy of the stories that you heard of questions asked to Oxbridge applicants at their interviews. A philosopher could probably waffle on for a few hours on the subject.

Has anyone heard back from the team re applications for the next series? (if anyone on the board has applied)

It's one piece if someone says "the roof fell in" or "we need to remove the roof" but if someone asked me to "paint the ceiling" I would arrange to paint the inside, not the outside. And if I was asked to "get up on the roof" I would climb up on the outside, not try to work out some way to cling Spiderman style to the ceiling.

Cracks on the ceiling means you can see it when standing inside, a cracked roof means you would have to go outside to have a look.

If I was sitting in a room and someone said a hang glider had landed on the roof, I wouldn't just look up and expect to see it above me...unless it was a glass ceiling of course.

My thoughts exactly. I was yelling, 'not the roof, the roof is outside. It's the ceiling, inside'.

The OED think otherwise.

They have the definition you give

Quote:
“ a. The external upper covering of a house or other building; the framing structure on top of a building supporting this. Also: a rooftop.”

But then

Quote:
“ b. The interior overhead surface of a room or other covered part of a house, building, etc.; the ceiling. Also: the upper internal surface of a cave or other structure.”

Not new either

Quote:
“1717 Lady M. W. Montagu Let. 18 Apr. (1965) I. 349 The Roof was painted with all sort of Flowers.”

I just wish she (VCM) would tell us the answer to the last question when the buzzer goes if it hasn't been answered (& Paxman on UC)!

At least one person I know has been offered an audition. But they may not have got back to everyone yet, so if you've not heard it doesn't necessarily mean you haven't got through.

Just caught up with Monday's episode. That music question was completely ridiculous. Take certain words from a song title to make different types of chart? You effin what?! Pathetic question.

VCM's hilarious anecdote about Rowan Williams should never have made the cut. I actually thought the little quesy shiver WAS the description of the encounter, I even laughed. Turned out not to be the case.

Agree about the question but I expect one per week these days.

I've been a fan of VCM for a while but since having more TV exposure she is starting to grate. The director should rein her in or edit around her.

Caught some of the Sky programme quiz night last night, amongst the 'ordinary' folk down the pub taking part one of the teams was made up of the Oxonians + 1.
I'm always surprised how out of millions of people in this country some people seem to be able to appear on multiple programmes

Perhaps because most of those millions of people never have any interest in appear on a programme and of those few will have the right qualities either intelligence for Only Connect or lack of it for many other programmes.

And therein lies the conundrum of the same people appearing on OC and Quiz night !

It 's probably been mentioned in this thread (but you try searching for "the link" here and see how many results you get) but there is a dummed down daytime version of "connections" on called "The Link", except they play as individuals not teams , if I recall the 2 minutes I caught the other day.

Both me and the husband can't stand her and spend half the programme saying, "Shut up Victoria"

Bit of a rubbish show.

There was a show on Sky One or one if it's spin offs years ago where they followed around ordinary people with interesting lives.

One of the people was Barry from Eggheads. All I remember was him being in his pub quiz team and being a taxi for his daughter - waiting outside of nightclubs for her.
