Glad the young nurse got through today, in spite of not knowing who the Bee Gees were

Does Louise, on today's edition, look like Lisa, the newest Egghead?
Or is it just me?

Looks like we could be in for another poor show tonight unless something drastic happens. .

Nothing drastic happened and the finalist only got two correct answers in the final round. He went home with £2,100.

Today's contestants aren't much better. Their counter drop timing is woeful.

She had the opportunity to win £10K but chose 2 counter questions for all six rounds, and managed to get two of them wrong. She didn't deserve to win the jackpot..

She didn't even try for the jackpot. After getting her first two questions wrong for 2 counters you would have to go for 3....the latest batch of contestants are rubbish.

This game is fixed. 3 counters in the exact same place? Yeah right.

I don't believe it's fixed at all. Many people have traded and won.

I bet they know where to drop the counters so they land in a particular place like at fairgrounds.

I actually felt a bit sorry for her.

There will always be question marks about the machine; not just about whether there's any subtle fixing going on, but whether the machine itself holds up properly over a whole filming session. Sometimes, the release mechanism seems to jar and drop a counter the same way 6,7,8 times in a row on the top rung - even more.

If it was a fully tested/reliable machine, it should even out as roughly 50/50 left and right on that top bit. But it often doesn't come close to that. You wonder whether they retighten/align it or something at the end of each session to make sure it's back to being properly 50/50.

Because of all that I would never take the trade, regardless of where the jackpot counter was. It's such a schizo machine that has too many repeating irregularities.

It's called random chance. Sometimes a roulette wheel will show five or six or even more red or black numbers in a row. It doesn't mean the wheel is fixed.

So all three of her counters landed on the same side, so what? She was just unlucky. As another poster said, others have taken the trade and won.

Do you really think one of ITV's best known game shows is bent? That sometimes they fix it so the jackpot can't be won? How many people would have to be in on that? And what would happen if it got out, and ended up in the papers?

What about the Independent Adjudicator, who's on set all the time? Are they in on it as well? Or is it such a clever swindle that the Adjudicator's never noticed it, after nearly three hundred shows?

If they really wanted to make the jackpot harder to win, there's a much easier way to do it - just make the questions in the final round harder, so the players would get less counters to put in the machine, rather than rig the machine itself.

I thought it was a long shot in gambling three thousand as the jackpot counter wasn't over the edge. So she didn't get one in line and missed out on the big prize, tough but thats the breaks in that game part knowledge and also a lot of luck to get it.

Of course you're correct that you'd expect the two halves of a drop zone to have the same number of drops, evening out 50/50.

But that does not mean you'd expect them to exactly alternate one left one right. There is nothing in the chance theory that can define how many drops it will even out over. Indeed, it is possible to have a thousand consecutive drops all in the same place - it is highly unlikely, but possible.

I never suggested the top rung should alternate every time left to right. Just that it should roughly even out over a whole session, or at least get not too far from evening out (say 60/40).

The release mechanism clearly has issues. 7 or 8 times in a row falling the same way - and it happens regularly - is a sub-obtimal randomising device, whichever way you look at it.

There is no reason in gaming theory to expect it to even out over a single session, or even to get close. It is possible for every single counter to bounce to the left in one show and then them all to bounce right in the next.

The problem is the disparity between what being purely random actually is and your perception of what being random ought to be. Your expecting an evenness and fairness within the random, which simply can not exist.
