I wish he'd stop being a 'character'.

And sort out his timing.

Steve deserved to win as he was the best with the questions. I think he was after Ben's job as he never stopped giving a running commentary of every counter drop. Given his awful timing of the drop I was surprised he won £4350.

Two of his counters won £2,000 including double counters.

Because the 1800's were the 19th century. 18 centuries had already passed.

But it started in 1829 so surely it should be the 1800.

I know you are right tho but it makes no sense ....... to me

Years 1 to 100 was the first century and 1701 to 1800 was the 18th century, so 1829 was in the 19th century.

It's probably debatable, but I would say 1800 was also in the 19th century, It's a bit like "when was the millenium?" argument.

It's always bugged me that convention says we go from 1BC to 1AD with no year zero. A child is not 1 year old until a year after its birth - it's aged 0 until then.

I was cringing when he kept saying to the machine/counters "Come to papa". Also found it funny that he started off by using the counters that the first guy, Rowland, had set up, with no shame (fair enough). Then when the same thing happened to him (he'd put some counters in and had no drops, then a woman answered a question before him and got to use the counters he'd set up) he made a point of saying he'd been robbed (more than once) and joked to someone else that they'd have to pay him half of what they win

But he seemed a jolly chap and I am always happy when someone wins a bit of money.

Yes we should use ISO 8601:2004 for year numbering, that has 0 instead of 1 BC and the BC dates adjusted accordingly. That way all the arguments about when the millennium started just evaporate and is clearly 2000 and 1800 is clearly 19th century.

Interestingly the Hindu and Buddhist calendars correctly start with the year 0.

Unfortunately, "jolly" doesn't override "one of the most annoying Tipping Point contestants I have ever come across".

Until someone decides differently the year 1800 was the last year of the 18th century. Likewise 2001 was the first year of the third Millennium. It's all explained here:-

Regarding what RattyO said about him saying 'come on papa'. Anyone who calls out to the machine is really irritating. You hear them frequently saying 'come to mama' and 'go slowly, slowly, slowly'. Also 'please, please, please!' like their life depends on it. It's a machine for goodness sake!

Fair enough I only watch it very infrequently so I'm not sure what the usual contestants tend to be like.

That's one interpretation and a valid but does not make it definitive. It is also valid to say that the turn of the century has always been celebrated when the numbers roll over and that is just a different interpretation all you have to do is start the counting in 1 BC rather than 1 AD.

Since the numbers and starting point have no physical basis and are just what we decide them to be then going with the year most people celebrate the millennium, century, start of the decade makes a lot more sense to me. The anorak inside me just uses ISO 8601:2004 which solves all the problems.

Has ISO8601 been adopted? Because I prefer an international standard to something a random website says.

It has been adopted but is not universal.

There is no universal standard which is why you get these arguments about when the millennium started, those saying that it started in 2001 are also saying that 1AD is the first year, if we could all agree on a standard where the first year is the equivalent of 1BC then no more pointless bickering.

The chit chat on this show annoys me although I'm guess they're told to pad it out a bit for the sake of length.

This guy in the final is terrible, not going for 3 counters is a crime in itself.
