Mmm. Mixed opinions about tonight's episode.
In some respects, it is interesting to see the impact that Connie Beauchamp will have on the Department. She is a divisive figure and I won't deny that her working relationships with the team - clearly Zoe - will make for some interesting viewing.
However, if Oliver Kent and Erika Hossington think that Amanda Mealing is Casualty's saviour, I think they will be mistaken. Casualty has always been an ensemble show; it's never been about one stand-out character. If Kent and Hossington really wanted to give Casualty a metaphorical shot in the arm, they would sort out the writing and the storylining, ensuring that ALL regular and supporting characters were well drawn and written for.
So we have a new gung-ho consultant on the show tonight. What do they have her doing? Breaking the rules and taking a risk on a call-out, instantly proving this consultant's heroism. How many times has Casualty introduced new leading doctors in this way in recent years? It's such a cliche now.
The patient storylines were tedious and implausible tonight, made worse by the fact that it was an episode of "spot the ex-soap star". To compound matters, ex A&E manager Dan Robinson reappears in the Department with a new name as a teacher having a relationship with a teenage girl... who just happens to be Ash's daughter. Wow. Not only is Holby such a small world, it's also a parallel universe where people change their names and identities just like that.
Unrealistic. Far-fetched. Unoriginal. No respect for its history. I give you Casualty, 2014 style.
