Great to have Connie back but a big thumbs down to the hair. It's inappropriate and, frankly, doesn't suit her. She looked so much better when it was pulled back.

Everyone who works on Casualty from Kent and Hossington downward should be made to sit and watch every episode of the first ten series or so of Casualty to remind them of how strong the show used to be.
What we need is a stronger and smaller cast, a serious injection of realism and a few less of the gimmicks and romantic storylines. I'm guessing that Holby City isn's a major trauma centre otherwise the scenes in Resus would be completely different too. Over all I think it's kill or cure time for the series. |

I wouldn't show them Series 10 as that's really the template for the current style of romance stories...

At 67 Connie must have had some work done,it must have cost a fortune as she looks good.

I think with regards to Oliver Kent, we still see his vision for the show whatever top position he holds. If he and Belinda Campbell held the same viewpoint last time, then it doesn't matter which of them was senior as they could work together on it. The same goes with him and Erika Hossington. What the show needs is someone completely fresh, who knows what Casualty ought to be.

I'm surprised so many are complaining about Casualty. I think aside from the constant actor reuse everything else is ok. Connie is in it now, that is all what matters

![]() Secondly, staff being related to each other is bloody annoying and if they introduce one more character as a relative to an existing one, I might actually scream. (I don't mind if a relative is introduced to give them family outside of the hospital). Thirdly, I like a small focus on the regulars to help us understand who they are and how they tick - but not at the expense of the medical and patient stories. 80s and 90s Casualty was able to balance this pretty well and we could easily have two developed patient stories and one regular story per episode. Fourthly, I want the ED to be busier. It never feels like a busy emergency department any more. They're always saying how busy it is but there's only ever about five people in reception... Fifthly, I want more political stories - Amanda has hinted Connie will bring this side a bit so I'm cautiously optimistic over that. |

46?! So hang on, that would have made her 34 when she first played Connie, who I think was already director of surgery by that point? I'm tempted to suggest that someone's telling fibs about their age... Definitely younger than 67 though.
I don't think Mealing is lying about her age as she was in the early days of Grange Hill (as a child obviously) and that first lot of kids (Todd Carty etc) were born 66/67 - they were the equivalent academic year to my brother who was born Feb 67 and has just turned 47. |

Didin't Connie join in 2004 or 2005? So less than 10 years and she'd have been mid to late 30s which is believable for a Consultant - she wasn't DOS when she joined - in fact she didn't get that post until 2010. Also, Connie was married to the Chairman when she arrived so it is possible nepotism played a part in her success re getting jobs.

The only person I can think of, from the top of my head, who knows Casualty inside out, is Barbara Machin, but she hasn't written for Casualty since the Xmas two-parter when Josh was stabbed, and she isn't really an Executive Producer. I do agree...all the show really needs is someone to provide a new perspective, or someone who hasn't been with the show for a while, a bit like with DTC returning to EastEnders after 3 years away

It doesn't need to be someone who has a huge history with the show, it just needs to be someone who has the vision that will make Casualty the programme that the viewers want. I think that I can see it; if I had the relevant experience of being a television producer, I think I'd be able to get Casualty where it needs to be, as would many of the other people on this forum. I think that Nikki Wilson did a good job.

Oh yes, you're right, I got my figures wrong, it was 2004. So she'd have been 37, which is a bit more plausible. I'm never entirely sure what's a different post or what's the same job with a different title, but she was whatever name they were using for the senior surgeon at the time, they had made a point about her being Ric's superior in her first episode. She resigned the post in 2005 after her attempt to channel all the funds into cardiothoracics and turn Holby into a specialist hospital, pretty much doing away with general surgery and leaving patients who needed operations being sent to other hospitals, was pretty much an unmitigated disaster: Elliot was actually brought in as her superior with her left as a junior consultant, and it was 2006 before she was even clinical lead on Darwin again after he stood down in her favour. Can't remember when her husband turned up, he may have been in charge off screen or he may have joined the hospital later.

Michael Beauchamp is established as being chairman of the Board (or something along those lines) pretty early on in to Connie's tenure although I don't think we actually see him until Series 7.
It is possible to become a Consultant at 32 I think, the 7 years of core training (including degree) take you up to 25 and then 7 years as a Reg before you can take your Consultancy exams. Then a post needs to come up and you need to be better than all the other candidates. Of course that relies on passing every stage at first attempt. |

Yes that's my memory as well. Connie reveals she is married at the end of her first episode (after having sex with Ric) and we quickly find out her husband is the Chairman though we don't meet him for a few months. So he was there before Connie.

Does anyone know who Connie is actually replacing? The other week they were talking about how they didn't have enough consultants, but they have Zoe and Ash. How many consultants does one department need? Has someone left who I have totally forgotten about?

I somehow can't see that being a problem for Connie!!
Possibly wrong thread but the age to make Consultant is the reason I find them retconning Jac's age in HC annoying. Original birth date of April 71 she was 34 when she arrived Winter 05/06 which was reasonable for a high flyer to not only have passed her Consultancy exams but be p++++d off that she kept getting passed over for promotion. The revised dates of April 75 she would only have been 30 - not old enough. |

Indeed - there are some decent patient storylines in series 10, but most of it is sub-Crossroads bobbins about Baz and Charlie/Laura and Ash/Mike and Rachael. I've always thought of series 10 as a terrible 'blip' in the otherwise excellent first 12 series of Casualty.
