Premium Vodkas
Do you drink any of the truly premium vodkas - Belverdere, Ciroc, Grey Goose etc?
Is there really such a difference between 'mid-range' vodkas such as Smirnoff or Absolut to the above? ![]() I must admit I can tell the difference between very cheap vodkas and something like Smirnoff, but I almost can't believe a £40 bottle of Grey Goose or £50 bottle of Ciroc is worth it

I am a vodka drinker and Ive tried a range of vodkas over the years. Heres my thoughts -
"cheap vodkas" supermarket own brands mainly are horrible. I don't like the taste of vodka much but these are to overpowering for me. Smirnoff - as a minimum standard this is it. I like Smirnoff, I will always buy this, unless other more expensive branded vodkas are on offer. Asda I think has this for around £13 for a large bottle. Absolute - afew pounds more expensive than Smirnoff, again its one I like and if it is on offer I will buy this over Smirnoff but that's personal taste. Russian Standard - This is slightly cheaper than Smirnoff, I have had it in pubs, I wouldn't buy it myself but it is ok. Stolichnaya - priced around the same as Absolute again its not one Id buy in the supermarket but its one I've had in pubs and its a nice vodka to have. Zubrowka - a friend once brought a bottle of this round to my house. Not a very nice vodka, its very strong and cheap tasting. Around the same price as Absolute but not worth the money. Grey Goose - I like this, this for me so far is my favourite vodka. It is expensive around double the price of Smirnoff but if I could I would most definitely buy this all the time. I don't drink vodka neat but this I had a shot of and really enjoyed it. For me its worth the price. Chase Vodka - won awards for being the best tasting vodka in the world, not for me! I got a bottle of this in a competition and tried it and its really not worth the price at all, like GG its double the price of Smirnoff but to me it tastes quite cheap. Overall - When in the shops for me the minimum standard has to be Smirnoff. I used to buy cheap vodkas but its just not worth it, Id rather pay the extra and enjoy it more. Ive not tried all the brands but as you can see above Ive done ok, the brands I have tried are the most widely available. |

Russian Standard is much nicer than Smirnoff IMO, far smoother.

Unless you're drinking them neat then they're fairly pointless.

You should try green mark. It's popular in russia for a reason, it's bloody good!
Cheap as well, i think about £16 in tesco. Almost no burn at all, lovely and smooth. Far, far superior to a lot of premium vodkas, let alone the cheap ones. I'm not easy to please either, before this stuff the only one I would touch was Belverdere |

My favourite is Moskovskaya but it's been such a long time since I've seen it I'm not sure it's on sale in the UK anymore.

Absolut if we are going cheap and it's fine, Grey Goose is our vodka of choice.

I don't mind Russian Standard either, but it wouldn't be my first choice. |

Apart from really chepo vodkas I have no problem in buying the supermarket own brand or Glens.
I bought some russian vokda that was on offer in morrisons £11 for 70cl and it was fine but no better that the usualy Imperial or whatever label the supermarket use when you're having it with a mixer. |

I find it almost irrelevant what the taste is - it's the effect that is important with vodka.
Grey Goose is the best. No hangover, lovely mellow feeling and tastes delicious to boot. Smirnoff and Absolut make me sick, but then I am very sensitive to alcohol and only drink the very best. |

If the voddy is being mixed with stuff like orange or cranberry then I go for the bog standard cheapest one I can get. If I'm having it in a Vesper then I go for a good quality one, my favourite being a local one (in Western Washington) from Softail Spirits.

Glens has gone up in price. 1L used to be cheaper (if only by pennies) than 1L of own brand but not any more.

Does anyone else put their vodka in the freezer? We sometimes do, it makes it gloopy and smoother.

I keep it in a cold fridge but as I said I use supermarket own and with mixers so no point in freezing it.
I once made the mistake of putting vodkat in the freezer - I didn't realise it was only 22% and it bloddy froze
