Do producers now regret putting Rylan through?

Over the years, loads of joke acts have been put through and made it pretty far in the live shows.

Last year, it was blatantly rigged for Rylan to be put through. He couldn't sing a note and there were rumblings that producers on the Katie Price model search show he did also worked on the x-factor. The first live show where he was saved over Carolynne Poole, an exec producer crouched down next to Louie walsh apparently consulting but "not advising him" to save Rylan was the icing on the cake. In that moment, any credibility the show had - already dubious at best - was gone. Then, when Rylan had a built a support base and managed to coax enough votes to survive over James Arthur/Ella Henderson in week 7, producers really seemed to panic.

And now - this year, there hasn't been a sniff of a 'joke act' in the lives. It's re-invented as a "serious singing competition". Any previous year, the yodeller, Souli Roots etc would have been a shoe-in for the lives.

Do you think the producers with hindsight now regret putting Rylan through? They seem to.

I don't think so. They didn't have a joke act two years ago either, and that was coming off the back of Wagner. Plus I think Shelley is destined to go down that route from next week.

Johnny Robinson says hello.

They've had a joke act every year since Jedward back in 2009. Even before that there were a few contestants who were on the verge of being labelled joke acts such as Same Difference and Eoghan.

Obviously not because he added fun and entertainment to the show, which is something this year it lacks severely. There was no act I was like REALLY excited to see (apart from Abi because she's my fave) but there was no hype for anyone tbh.

They did have Frankie. Although not a conventional "joke" act, he couldn't sing and was a hate figure.

Lol, I actively remember this as the joke act year and they toned it down a year later...

Johnny Robinson, 2 shoes, Frankie and Kitty Brucknell were all pretty ridiculous and gimmicky. Plus, Goldie was put through to lives but dropped out just before the first show.

Who were those Scottish guys, oh and the creepy incestual brother and sister (she had scary eyes)?

They have always had a "what are you doing here" act.

Just because Shelley is a but loud and brash that doesn't make her a joke act. She has a terrific voice and deserves her place. In my view, a joke act is one where "entertainment value" outstrips vocal ability. Shelley may be entertaining but she also has the voice to back it up.

Rylan could at least hold-a-tune live on a Saturday nite show, he may not had been the best singer but he was defo a personality and that has earned him a presenting career.

Over the years we have seen better singers that are so bland and lack personality, someone with the best of both worlds is hard to come by.

Why would they? He's doing other stuff now and is a walking advertisement for TXF.

I found that Rylan was the highlight of the live tour show, him along with James Arthur and Union J. This year's XF is lacking a bit of humour. Thank goodness we have Louis and Sharon because at least they inject a level of amusement into it. Gary takes everything far too seriously and Nicole, though lovely, doesn't seem to know what's going on in the UK. I feel that Shelley is undoubtedly the joke act and Abi is the 'novelty' act a la Spraggan.

That was Same Difference

Mind you, as an act I thought they were okay

This year, if he had gotten through to the lives the Yodeller would have been portrayed as the joke act

They are the ones. Yes they could actually sing but they were so sickly sweet it was embarrassing and they were creepy and inappropriate, singing a love song to each other that week was all kinds of wrong.

Wasn't Louis Walsh rather beastly to them??

The Carpenters were brother and sister and they had dozens of hits! Okay Karen could actually sing well.

Cocozza is to blame. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have Perma-Sam or Sideshow Luke on this show, total waste of space. Novelty acts, I can live with.

I actually miss the "novelty" act this year. Frankie I hated but Rylan and Wagner I really enjoyed and looked forward to their performances every week. Its all to serious for me this year

While true, they were not crazy eyed and being cast as the XF's version of the lad and the girl from highschool musical.

They were creepy as heck.

Frankie wasn't novelty. He's more of a hate figure, a la Katie Waissel, as Johnny was the joke act that year since Goldie backed out.

How much of the dislike for Katie Weasel was down to what she herself had done and how much was down to the judges repeatedly saving her when she was in the bottom two??

Rylan could not sing for sure but I thought he was funny. But I do totally understand that a better singer should have been in the top 3 than Rylan...however when Rylan was on the live shows I did find him entertaining where I know many people didn't - each to their own I'll say
