They sent a re-conditioned HH4 and that is worse that they new one, so will transfer back to that one. OH said I've not to muck around with the hubs and to buy a wireless adaptor so any recommedations? using the Home Plugs for the sky box but wi-fi downstair still rubbish

Forgive me but the half-trained, half-English speaking idiots that are employed as Agents at the BT call centre wouldn't know a broken HH from a milk shake.

Replacing the the HH (BTW I have a HH 4 at home and it works extremely well.) with another was always unlikely to fix you problem.

They will certainly allow you to extend the WiFi downstairs. However.

You mention you are using Powerline adapters for the Sky box. Where is this Sky box? If it is where you want to extend the WiFi to then that isn't a problem as you just remove the existing adapters and use the new ones.

But if the Sky box is elsewhere that may cause a problem. You cannot use two different set of HomePlugs/Powerline adapters on the same mains circuits. You can though often use one "master" plug next to the router and several "slave" remote units that talk back to the "master".

The problem is all the units must be compatible with each other (not necessarily the same make however). There is a real chance the BT WiFi plugs you've linked to are not compatible with your existing Powerline adapters. That need not be an insurmountable problem as you could buy an additional single adapter that is compatible with the BT WiFi plugs and use that for the Sky box.

But as I said if the Sky box is where you would be using the WiFi equipped plug anyway there is no problem. Just do a straight swap old for new.

We got some wifi adapter from sky to plug into the box and that picks up the wifi intermittently that is why I though these would do killing two birds with one stone so that the wifi was stronger in the lounge so that we could connect the sky box laptop and tablet wirelessly. Thanks for your help

So is the Sky box in the lounge then? That BT kit has a pair of ethernet ports on the remote end as well as WiFi. So if the Sky box is close to the plug just run a length of cable to it. Pointless using WiFi if the two units are side by side

And if you have one of them new fangled Smart Tellys you could wire that the the HomePlug as well.

So I could plug in the sky box and the laptop and just use the wifi for the tablet? we are all in the one room, the computers upstairs are hard wired and they are running brilliantly its just the wifi. Thanks for your help

You can use WiFi for the laptop. Unless you use it more or less as a desktop static in one place. If you use it sat on the sofa or whatever then trailing a bit of wire round the room might be a tad inconvenient, not to mention being one of those"'elf 'n' safety gorn mad" scenarios

Right I will plug in the sky box and leave the laptop and tablet wifi and hope that the signal is better than what we are getting at present, Thanks for all the info

One trick to make life a bit easier.

You will need to configure the WiFi part of those plugs. So set up the same SSID (network name), security type and password as your HomeHub. But choose different WiFi channels to avoid mutual interference.

That makes it a bit easier if you wander round the house and move out of range of one unit and into the range of the other. In theory the laptop/tablet will just switch from one to the other almost without you noticing.
