Just loaded Windows 8.1.
Some Start Button, useless why have they missed out its main feature which is The Programe Menue.
When I had it as Win 8, I used additional button downloads which gave me the button back with all its features, now when I use it on 8.1.it does nothing

Did you check that these 3rd party apps were compatible before you upgraded?
Which one are you using, maybe someone can advise on the specific app you installed?

We've known about the functionality of the Start button for months.

You may need to reinstall whatever utitlity you used to get a Start menu back.

Your programmes will be on the new start menu. The feature you want is no longer a main feature of windows....Restart or download your third party solution to take you back to windows 7.

I personally like using the start screen but for those that would rather have an Application View instead of the tiles.

Right Click on the Task bar and select properties

Select the Navigation tab

Tick the box for Show the Apps view automatically when I go to Start.

It doesn't give you the Start Menu but shows a list of all applications.

That's strange. This review says it still works on 8.1.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/20544...ndows-8-1.html

Try uninstalling it and then reinstalling the latest version from the site.

If you still have no joy, try one of the others from the first list.
Classic Shell is free, and definitely works.
I use Start8 myself, but that costs 4.

Ah well, I use Start8 in conjunction with ModernMix, to run some of the Metro apps in windows on the desktop, and I put the shortcuts for those on the Start8 menu.
I'm not one of those who want to hide the Metro Start Screen altogether.

You could achieve the same by creating a Program Toolbar

Right click Taskbar, create a new toolbar through C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. The former should have a bigger selection of programs.

Click select folder and there will be a Programs toolbar on the taskbar. Click >> to access the list of Programs.

To access certain other features such as Control Panel and Power Options (to shutdown or restart the computer for example) right click the Start Button (or press WIN + X).

I use StartMenuX which I also used in W7. IMO it is far better than classic shell or start8. There is a free version which is more than adequate for most people..
Like others I don't dislike Metro and accept that it is part of the OS that does have it's uses, but, I also like the convenience of the older start menu when I'm on the desktop.
I find I use the W8 start menu more and more as I get used to it. I see no point in the continuous ranting against it. It is what it is and they ain't taking it away. Just use one of the 3rd party solutions, stay with W7, or move to another OS, plenty of choice there.....Not understanding the anger really..

How is what useless?
Is 13 posts on DS supposed to be some benchmark that's been achieved?

I forgot to put a joke alert there. So you do not like the out of the box look of W8.1. So do what you would do with any other OS. Get yourself some programme that makes it look the way you want. I tried one freeware, I think it was Classic Shell. It did a pretty good job, the only problem being that I do not use a start menu a lot anyway. I can not use start screen as well. People think they are computer savvy, but when something comes that they can rectify easily, they will moan instead. Go customise it, get a different OS or punish MS by buying a mac.

It has been documented for months what the new start button would just take you back to the metro start screen. It shouldn't really come as much as a surprise. The thing I like about the start button is more to do with what happens when you right-click it.

OK, I was thinking irony but wasn't sure.....
I think it would punish your bank account rather than MS to go Mac.....

The start button just seems a bit pointless to me (except for the added shutdown/restart option)

Mouse to bottom corner and left/right click did the same thing in 8.0, it's now just a visible button

It is called Windows 7.

Windows 8 simply follows that trend of an OS doing more of what it wants, less of what you want. It is incredible that we had months of the Start Button returning yet it never was really returning.
We knew that anyway, the return was always an economic with the truth return.

The start button is there, it's just not doing what those who complained expected.

I don't know why people have such a massive problem with the start screen. I find it no better or worse than the old style Windows 7 start menu. You just use it to start your program and then move on. I honestly don't understand why it is such a huge issue to some people.

It baffles me as well.
But I suppose it gives us something to talk about?

I have 8.1 installed on a laptop and it's okay but as I'm old hat my main O/S is Windows XP Pro 64bit and I still haven't used a better O/S and I use Vista and 7 also.
