Apparently, Verdi thought the vocal writing for the last movement of Beethoven's 9th was crap. Who did he think he was ?

Really? I thought this was Debussy, wasn't one third of Verdi's operas based on German novels among them Schiller?

It was Schiller who wrote the lyrics to the vocal part.

It may have been bad for Verdi to slate this work, however considering Verdi wrote many operatic masterpieces and Beethoven only wrote one. Therefore I think this places Verdi in a better position than most to criticise.

But everyone else says the choral is well good and do not moan about the vocal writing. Anyway, there was a cartoon with Verdi grinding out on a hurdy-gurdy, implying his (Verdi's) music was crap.

When asked in 1889 to add his name to the honors list for a festival at Beethoven’s birthplace in Bonn, Verdi replied, “I cannot refuse the honor that is offered to me.”

“We are talking about Beethoven!” he added. “Before such a name we all prostrate ourselves reverently.”
