We regularly download and watch a movie on our bluray player and just wondering if there is a way to actually record these movies onto a hard drive, I take it there must be some security involved to stop you doing this but if there is a way I would live to know.

Not possible.

Both HDMI sockets are outputs. Plus both sockets have 5V DC supplies on them. Plug those together with an HDMI cable and it could well end in tears.

If DRM is involved, as is very likely, then there is no legitimate way to do it and discussing ways to circumvent that is not really allowed on DS.

How many times does it have to be said?
No, it cannot be done. The whole reason companies stream their content is because they've spent a lot of time and money for DRM, making sure licensed content cannot be illegally copied easily.
Have you thought that maybe either buying the Blu Ray or DVD to be the most simpler option?
