Describing Prince Rogers Nelson as "unique" is a bit of an understatement. With his archives upon archives of music he is regarded as one of the most prolific artists of our time and space.
"Purple Rain", "Sign 'o' The Times", "Parade", "Lovesexy" are all masterpieces. I'm quite surprised there isn't an appreciation thread for the Purple one.

Any fans?

There is but it is quite a few pages down, probably not that popular on DS...U could try prince.org as an alternative site to visit, if u haven't done already.

Even though it is a Prince forum, don't expect it 2 b all lovin, towards him, he gets quite a bit of stick. Which is good in my opinion.

Maybe, maybe not..if they r, u don't hear a lot from them. Just as long as he keeps producing music, that's all that matters to me.

Unique is a fan I believe, he usually pops up now and again. But he can be quite critical of Prince as well. But fans should be critical, and not savour everything their favourite artist puts out or does and make it out to be something fantastic, creative etc.. when in reality it is shit.

With Prince though even if he produced shit from now and until he dies...not many artists could have released the quality of albums he put out in the 80's to mid 90's, and that will always be his legacy.

Unfortunately from a business standpoint nothing about Prince's motives has made sense for a long time.

am an occasional poster on the .org and
I think there would be less grief on there if we were simply talking about artistic decline. Obviously it's more than that.

I'm here to show Prince some love! Was given the opportunity to go to one of his arena shows the other day and he was fabulous. I didn't stop dancing all the way from start to finish

I was at the Manchester one on the Saturday - utterly amazing. I haven't stopped singing & dancing all week 2 and a half hour set with a cracking setlist:

I feel extremely lucky that I was able to experience such a talented musician

Saturday Night was party night in Manchester...such a great show, shame it ended..was hoping he would make it longer what with it being Saturday night and everything.

To me he is the greatest live performer that there has ever been, and if you only get to see one act live...make sure it's Prince. Went with a friend who isn't a Prince fan, likes the odd song but that's about it, even they said it was the best live act they had seen.

i'll believe it when I have them, and played em end to end and not a minute sooner. note the platinium purple rain records on the sleeve, and the absence of the purple rain deluxe edition that should have been out by now. I wonder what's happening with that

btw he's appearing on good morning America which is being broadcast live at the moment. and warners have said "album release will be marked by a series of very special events taking place globally". whatever that is

The new album HITNRUN Phase Two is very good, Baltimore, Rocknroll Loveaffair and Stare are outstanding tracks.

I haven't heard the new album yet but I heard it's very good.

I decided to play his "1999" album again after not hearing it for so many years and what a masterpiece. "Let's Pretend We're Married", "D.M.S.R" and "All The Critics..." is fantastic, and the album version of "1999" is so much better than the single version.

I saw two shows, in his heyday, and he was sensational. Sadly, that was before he got religion big time, and lost his mojo. Since then, there's been the occasional flash of brilliance, but mostly his output is boring.

I am bumping this thread as I thought it would be a good place to post favourite songs, shows and anecdotes.

I know there are threads in the main music and showbiz forums, but they will get lost in time, whereas this forum is smaller and easier to search.

So, how did you come to appreciate Prince?

I was a latecomer. I knew the big hits of course but didn't really follow him.

It just so happened that there was a poster up near my work for the Nude tour and since I love going to gigs a workmate and I thought we would go along to see what all the fuss was about. I can remember being pretty scathing about his high-heeled thigh boots before I went to see him.

We were way up near the roof but I can remember thinking how good he was by the end of the third or fourth song. By the end of the concert I had decided that I needed to get tickets and see the show again if possible.

All in all I was lucky enough to see him 5 times, the most recent was a while ago now at one of the 02 shows.

Regrets - that I didn't see the Lovesexy tour, that I didn't keep up enough to see some of his more recent shows - that I'll never have the chance to see him live again.

Perversely, his death has caused an outpouring of clips onto you tube which has enabled me to see interviews, concerts and listen to songs I was not familiar with (I cannot claim to be a superfan who owned everything he did).

He really was something.

I'll get the ball rolling with this set he did at the Brits in 2006. I believe Kaiser Chiefs had to follow this - shame

Prince & The Revolution ~ First Avenue Benefit Concert MPLS 1983-08-03

Perhaps the most significant time capsule of all live shows, the legendary August 3, 1983 benefit gig at First Avenue was the first time anybody on the planet would hear several soon to be career defining staples all at once.

1.Let's Go Crazy 1:05 2.When You Were Mine 6:33 3.A Case Of You 9:02 4.Computer Blue 11:38 5.Delirious 18:16 6.Electric Intercourse 22:26 7.Automatic 28:14 8.I Would Die 4 U 35:01 / Baby I'm A Star 37:15 9. Little Red Corvette 42:05 10.Purple Rain 48:11 11.D.M.S.R 64:23

I became a fan of his music around the time of Batman, though took several listens to enjoy the album, and even then that wasn't the album the triggered me to enjoy his music.

I was lent a copy of ATWIAD, and as it was the 80's I was more into things like Depeche Mode, PSB, Erasure, The Jam, Madness etc...so ATWIAD sounded so different to me, and I really enjoyed it after first listen....not only did that album get me into Prince, it made me go back and look into acts from the 60's & 70's, and got me into artists such as The Beatles, The Doors, Hendrix, Bowie etc...

Have seen him a few times...The Nude Tour at Maine Road, Act II Tour at Wembley Stadium & the next day at Sheffield Arena, Ultimate Live at Wembley Arena & hit N Run at Manchester Arena. Would have liked to have seen 21 Nights & his Mic Tour, as well as any aftershow gig, also had tickets for his Blenheim Palace show that got pulled.

can you post a link to this album in the prince fav songs thread in the music forum ?

I became a fan from the first time I heard I wanna be your lover (even though I was into punk/new wave at the time) but got seriously into his music from around the world in a day album.

r I p to a true legend X
