It's decline is in line with other long running tv shows and in line with Channel 4's peaktime share decline.
If you compare 2009 Big Brother to 2002 Big Brother of course it looks bad. However, Big Brother used to get 5m while ITV and BBC dramas that were getting 8m and soaps were getting 14m. Now the dramas are lucky to get 5m and the soaps 8m, Big Brother meanwhile is down to 3.5-4m. It's all relative decline. Other Channel 4 shows, things like Ugly Betty are much more alarming - starting with 5m viewers and now struggling with around 1m. Desperate Housewives - starting with 4m, now lucky to see 2m. Celebrity Ding Dong - starting with 2m, now lucky to see 1m. And thats in the past few years. Rzt found some terrestrial shares on the BB9 Ratings Thread which backed this theory up. That BB's share of the terrestial audience hadn't really declined at all. |

The only sharp jump was inbetween BB7 and BB8 from 4.7m to 3.9m. Before that the figures were jumping allover the place from as high as 5.8m to as low as 4.4m. And the reason for the sudden decline lies in the last celebrity series ...
BB9 was slightly down on BB8 (0.3m), which is roughly in line with other drops in other years, probably for the reason that BB8 was rubbish so people expected BB9 to go the same way. But as usual the solid BB fan base (currently around 3m) will tune in tonight, as well as a lot of casual viewers and people who have never watched the show before to see about the celebrities. The thing about Big Brother is with its ratings you can't write it off because of the previous series. I'm not saying CBB6 will rate amazingly. I'm expecting it to be the worst CBB series (ratings wise, lets be real here) but I think it can definitely beat BB9, perhaps even BB8. The rest of the series pre BB8 (BB1, BB2, BB4, BB6, BB7) averaged between 4.4m and 4.7m viewers, so the show remained pretty steady throughout. It never had any sharp falls - and only the aforementioned BB3 and BB5 saw any sort of leaps. I think it's also interesting to see that there was never a general decline before BB8. The show's ratings typically fluctuated. They fell in BB4 but jumped back up for BB5. They fell in BB6 but jumped back up for BB7. I also don't agree that CBB5 is to blame for the decline. BB8 launched with strong ratings despite the race row and the following highlight shows did well enough. I think the cause could be more readily attributed to BB8 than CBB5. |

She worked for C4 at the time of BB5/CBB3 as Commissioning Editor for Big Brother and was responsible for the return of Celebrity Big Brother before jumping ship to Brighter Pictures/Endemol.
The show has faded out across the world. BBUK remains the most successful version of the show anywhere, but I can see it heading to pretty consistent losses every year on, a bit like the soaps. No matter how good they are, they just won't improve. BB is one of the few shows on TV that airs a similar number of hours to the soaps. At least if the drops are at the level of BB9, it has a few years left. It just can't afford to have BB8 style declines of a million viewers. The BB8 launch wasnt about 6.6m which was of course good, but they shed almost half of their audience overnight with less than 4m tuning in for the first highlights. I'd say it was a combination of CBB5 and the all female launch. |

I think you're using atypical examples to prove a point. The 5.8m average for BB3 was exceptional but not typical. Again, the 5.0m average for BB5 was an oddity - terrific ratings but not typical.

BB8 launched with strong ratings despite the race row and the following highlight shows did well enough. I think the cause could be more readily attributed to BB8 than CBB5. However there were signs it was not good. After BB5 it all pretty much downhill. CBB3 underperformed, BB6 was the lowest rated series ever, BB7 ended really badly, CBB5 was down significantly until the race row. The only light spot was CBB4 into the first half of BB7, which did quite well. I think Big Brother fought against the inevitable decline for much longer than anyone thought it could. Looking back its a miracle it took until BB8 for the big drop in audience to show. I think its a case of series like BB5 and BB7 overperforming rather than BB8 and BB9 underperforming. I think we have now reached a plataeu which is much more realistic for the show. It could not conceivably keep averaging the same as it had done since 2000. I dont think any show has managed that. |

Just worth adding with this discussion- if anyone is interested in the BB ratings then InsideBigBrother have tables for every series
http://www.insidebigbrother.net/ratings.ibb No I don't work for the website ![]() For the CBB5 table, the first week or so wouldn't look out of place on the BB9 table, bearing in mind the first 2 Wednesday's and Friday's were both live shows. So it appears that the decline started before BB8 but was bumped up by the race row. |

That is something often ignored, CBB5 was on course to be a major flop until the race row. It still lost 300,000 on CBB4 despite the massive audiences for the Jade eviction and the peak of the race row.

The BBC has just announced that the new Doctor will be revealed at the end of tomorrow's Doctor Who Confidential on BBC1.
That is bordering on genius scheduling. Against the FA Cup match on ITV and moments before they attempt to launch some brand new Saturday night shows. Not to mention all the press they will get for this tomorrow morning and all the radio coverage tomorrow. |

Really liked Damages - its a pity the main channels dont put these US dramas in primetime AND stick with them.

at the end of the last series the voice over person said that it would be back next year anyway
![]() think it did ok in its 10:30 slot! There is an article on it in TV and Satellite Week that was published three days ago. This says it is on BBC 1 from February. No mention of HD? The first series was simulcast on BBC HD. |

9 million for Jonathan Creek!
I was expecting 8 million for it at most. I really hope this prompts David Renwick to write more episodes for the BBC. Brilliant repeat rating for W&G too. BBC1 had a very good day yesterday! |

Not to mention all the press they will get for this tomorrow morning and all the radio coverage tomorrow. Not sure it will make a massive impact in ratings terms - DWC hasn't been trailed so far as I can see, and if every Dr Who geek in the country tuned in, it's hardly going to dent the football ratings. Somehow, I don't think Dr Who obsessives will care much for football anyway.... ![]() I wonder why the Beeb has decided to launch Total Wipe Out against the second half of an FA Cup football match? Granted, it will start bang on cue for the mass switch-over from ITV's half-time analysis (indeed, the Dr Who reveal will also), but it still seems an odd decision. Wouldn't next week have been a better launch date? Judging by the trailers, it looks like It's a Knockout for the 21st century but without Stuart Hall or the silly outfits. But Hammond presenting it should give it a lift. Perhaps Harry Hill will help to make it a hit, if its early ratings are in HITW territory, or will his ITV bosses warn him off creating two successive Saturday teatime hits for BBC1? ![]() Quote:

To be fair, it is repeated on Sunday and I assume the rest of the series will air in the Sunday teatime slot too. Perhaps it's consistent with BBC1's successful strategy this Christmas of exposing shows to a larger audience through same-week repeats?

When does the series finish? And I wonder where Countryfile will be, will it be in like a 5pm slot... or 8pm slot?
So who knows, maybe it will be BBC1's equivalent of The Royal/Heartbeat flitting about here and there - wonder what it is about these long-running Sunday night cosy old Yorkshire schedule fillers?

I think the BBC were rather stung that DT announced he was quitting the role on the NTA (awards) on ITV. There was even a suggestion that they would bid for the NTA when they next come up for grabs.
