Doesn't Strictly do decent business against Corrie each year- 7/8m?
I'm not syaing Dancing on Ice will rate that highly, because Strictly is in another league. But I don't see it getting a pasting. It could get some decent numbers and knock down EE a couple of million.
SCD held up very well against Corrie last year. 8.3m for SCD and 8.9m for Corrie.

Here is last years (2007) Xmas Day Top 10:

Christmas Day Top Ten:

1. EastEnders (8pm, BBC One): 13.9 million

2. Doctor Who (6.50pm, BBCOne): 12.2 million, peak 13.8 million

3. EastEnders (6.20pm, BBC One): 11.6 million, peak 11.8 million

4. BBC News (6.05pm, BBC One): 10.4 million, peak 10.1 million

5. To The Manor Born (9.30pm, BBC One): 9.8 million, peak 10.1 million

6. Shrek 2 (4.40pm, BBC One): 9.1 million, peak 10.1 million

7. Coronation Street (8.30pm, ITV1): 8.9 million, peak 9.6 million

8. Strictly Come Dancing (8.30pm, BBC One): 8.3 million, peak 9.9 million

9. The Queen's Speech (3pm, BBC One & ITV1): 7.5 million

10. Finding Nemo (3.10pm, BBC One): 7.1 million, peak 8.3 million

After all those Xmas Day predictions, hardly anyone guessed that EE would be at 9pm.
Some did...

As for Christmas Day, if ITV1 is going to go with something like this (those in bold seemingly set in stone, the rest my guesses)....:

ITV1:
3.00 The Queen
3.10 Harry Potter and the ….
5.50 News
6.00 You’ve Been Framed
6.30 TV Burp
7.00 Emmerdale
8.00 Coronation St
9.00 Dancing on Ice

10.30 Benidorm
11.00/11.30 News
11.15/11.45 Film: TBA

Then BBC1 has to run something like:

BBC1:
2.00 TOTP
3.00 HM The Queen
3.10 Film: Madagascar
4.40 TBA
5.45 News
5.55 EastEnders
6.25 Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death
6.55 Doctor Who: The Next Doctor
8.00 Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special
9.00 EastEnders
9.30 The Royle Family: The New Sofa
10.30 Gavin & Stacey
11.30 News
11.40 Film: TBA
OK, not much else was as I predicted.

Some interesting line-ups here, and I haven't got my head round it all yet. It looks like BBC1 has been outwitted by ITV1, but the 30 min split between EE has happened before and BBC1 has done well. I think in 199[4?] we ended up with:

7.30 EE
8.00 Keeping up Appearances
8.30 EE
9.00 One Foot in the Grave Special

Keeping Up Appearances, not surprisingly, ended up with its biggest ever audience at that time, 16m+ I think.

Or was it Birds of a Feather....? (I can't remember - any hoarders of Radio Times know?)

Either way, this fantastic news for Wallace & Gromit, I'd be astonished if that doesn't top 10m now, maybe significantly more.

I wonder what ITV will put up at 9.30? Benidorm will be trounced by The Royle Family. I think i'd put the Stanley Baxter thing on at 9.30.

I guess things could still change before this time tomorrow?

SCD held up very well against Corrie last year. 8.3m for SCD and 8.9m for Corrie.

Here is last years (2007) Xmas Day Top 10:

Christmas Day Top Ten:

1. EastEnders (8pm, BBC One): 13.9 million

2. Doctor Who (6.50pm, BBCOne): 12.2 million, peak 13.8 million

3. EastEnders (6.20pm, BBC One): 11.6 million, peak 11.8 million

4. BBC News (6.05pm, BBC One): 10.4 million, peak 10.1 million

5. To The Manor Born (9.30pm, BBC One): 9.8 million, peak 10.1 million

6. Shrek 2 (4.40pm, BBC One): 9.1 million, peak 10.1 million

7. Coronation Street (8.30pm, ITV1): 8.9 million, peak 9.6 million

8. Strictly Come Dancing (8.30pm, BBC One): 8.3 million, peak 9.9 million

9. The Queen's Speech (3pm, BBC One & ITV1): 7.5 million

10. Finding Nemo (3.10pm, BBC One): 7.1 million, peak 8.3 million
These being overnights of course - the actual ratings were even more impressive, particularly EE (14.6m - biggest audience of 2008) and Dr Who (13.4m - i think - some time shift). The peak was about 15m on BBC1 as Dr Who finished and EE started.

14.3m and 13.1m without being pedantic.

Looking at this, BBC One's dominance of Christmas day is simply stunning.

Just picking out To The Manor Born, a show which hadn't been on air for 26 years, getting more the Coronation Street.

Why can't ITV attract the hoards on Christmas day?

I hope Survivors holds onto the viewers because this show is just getting better each week. No like the cack that was Bonekickers.

That's been discussed a lot lately, I suppose it's because BBC1 pull out all the stops for Christmas Day as it's most important day of the year, ITV doesn't see it high in their list of importance

Then factor in the family viewing - 'Grandad' wants to watch 'To the Manor Born' so on Christmas Day the entire family ends up sitting watching it, normally the rest of the family would go into seperate rooms and find something else to watch on Five or Dave

There will be less switching around on Christmas Day. I also wonder how much people pay attention to the TV they are watching. Surely half of EastEnders is spent explaining the plot to some random family member who last watched it in 1996

I reckon you are thinking of 1995 but there was no EE sandwich on this occasion:

And 1994 was vastly different:

http://tvlistings.thetvroomplus.com/listing-1864.html

P.S. Fancy airing the EE Omnibus on Christmas Day! Strange also to see Neighbours in the mix on the 1995 schedule...

An EastEnders omnibus on Christmas Day??? Was Christmas a Sunday back then, by any chance?

I think I prefer the more recent schedules TBH. I suppose back in 1994/1995 they were fantastic schedules which guaranteed viewers, but now they just seem a bit...dull.

Yeah, but even still, you'd think they'd find another slot to accommodate it as they did in 2005.

Agreed. In more recent times I'd say both 1998 and 2005 (excluding DW) were decidedly poor.

The EE/DW/EE combo last year worked a lot better.
Yeah, you got to remember last year's DW got mass media reporting due to Kylie Minogue appearing in it and in EastEnders there was the climax of a storyline that had being running for over a year. Both cant say the same about this year's episodes.

I think DW is fine at 6.00, last year EastEnders got 12 million in that slot (which started at 6.20) but the problem is the gap between 7-8.00, will the viewers return to BBC1 at 8.00? Last year having EE/DW/EE stopped viewers from turning over or off hence the extra large ratings it got. But this year I dont see that glue to hold viewers.

They are awful. Even ITV have got better programmes this year than that!

BTW, can we have a look at ITV schedules for previous Christmas' anywhere?

Strictly Come Dancing is hitting nearly 10m at the moment, and the Christmas Special claimed 8.3m against Coronation Street last year, so I think BBC'll be ok.

Some of those old Christmas line-ups are terrible. People moan about the state of Christmas TV, but its mostly just rose-tinted glasses. Can you imagine scheduling Aunties Bloomers, Before they were famous or Animal Hospital on Christmas Day now.

We've actually got it pretty good.

I think DW is fine at 6.00, last year EastEnders got 12 million in that slot (which started at 6.20) but the problem is the gap between 7-8.00, will the viewers return to BBC1 at 8.00? I think thats an accurate analysis. Primetime starts earlier and finished later on Christmas Day than it usually does. I don't think the 6pm start time for Doctor Who will prevent it from still doing strong business - it not as well as last years kylie-inflated offerings.

The problem you hint at for BBC One is that they always have a single 1 hour slot vs Corrie which will be the only one they loose all day. Last year, they benefitted from that slot being so late (8.30-9.30) whereas this year its 7-8. Thats better scheduling from ITV who can try to launch a big offering like DOI at the one time of the day they've got strong numbers watching - after Corrie. The key to the evening for the BBC will be if they can tempt everybody back across with EastEnders, or if they loose a couple of million more to ITV for the rest of the night.

I think, as other's have stated, that BBC and ITV have a rota (god help them all if Louis Walsh ever becomes head of ITV) of who decides the positioning. Last year BBC decided the position of EastEnders first. This year ITV have first choice, and positioned Emmerdale and Coronation Street bang in the middle of prime time.

The last time ITV probably had first choice (2006), the same thing occured, but an hour later:

7.00 Emmerdale
8.00 Coronation Street
9.00 Doc Martin

Obviously the timings been moved back an hour to accomodate Dancing On Ice and the 9.30 programme. To counter this in 2006, BBC1 went with:

6.30 EastEnders
7.00 Doctor Who
8.00 Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Party
9.00 EastEnders
9.30 Vicar of Dibley

Because of ITV moving everything back an hour, Doctor Who is now at 6, and Strictly at 7, EastEnders moving at 8 to miss Emmerdale and Coronation Street. But the basic premise from BBC1 is the same: Doctor Who v Emmerdale; Strictly Come Dancing v Coronation Street and an EastEnders sandwich, followed by a comedy special.

BBC1 should just ignore ITV1 at Christmas.

If they did...

6.00 EastEnders
6.30 Wallace and Gromit
7.00 Doctor Who
8.00 Strictly Come Dancing
9.00 EastEnders
9.30 The Royle Family
10.30 Gavin and Stacey (I refuse to accept that some Blackadder doco should be on xmas day)

...ITV would be forced to change their schedule- they would never let Corrie go up against Doctor Who and Emmerdale against EastEnders and Wallace and Gromit.

I dont see why the BBC should have been forced to move Wallace and Gromit late and Doctor Who early. They always have the upper hand on xmas day.

Why should BBC1 have the upper hand? It's complete folly, if you ask me. Both channels should accommodate each other.to create the ultimate viewing pleasure...

Because BBC1 always has much better ratings.

They should not have to fit things around ITV1 - let them move their programmes to suit.

Ultimate viewing pleasure? Christmas night TV? Tell me of a pub that's open and I'll be there.

9pm slot last night

BBC1 - Survivors - 4.63m (18.2%)
BBC2 - Horizon - 1.59m (6.2%)
ITV - I'm a Celeb... - 7.43m (29.4%)
C4 - The Queen's Cornoation: Behind Close Doors - 2.49m (9.8%)
Five - CSI: Miami - 1.94m (7.6%)

Slightly disappointly figures for Survivors last night - figures might pick up next week as I'm A Celeb... finishes a Friday. Shame, as I'm really enjoying it.

More ratings available here:

the BBC should just leave ITV to it.

The BBC should air programmes when they want we should have a SCD and Coronation Street clash again and see a laughably low Figure for ITV1.

I reckon it should be like including some actual times by the way ;

BBC1

6:00 BBC News
6:20 EastEnders
6:50 Doctor Who
7:50 Wallace and Gromitt
8:20 EastEnders
8:50 SCD Christmas Special
9:40 The Royle Family
10:30 Gavin and Stacey
11:30 BBC News
11:45 FILM

ITV1

6:00 ITV1 NEWS
6:20 Some boring repeat
6:50 Emmerdale
7:50 some other programme
9:00 Coronation Street
10:00 Comedy drama

EastEnders could do really well thia year again with the 2 episodes fixed with doctor who in the middle

lets hope for 12m
