I suspect the BBC and ITV will be mindful they have more summer to fill this year, with no big football tournament to help them pad out the schedules.

Apologies for a couple of inaccuracies regarding 3 d.p. ratings, editing post in a minute.

You know that BBC News- could that be part of the Top 10, because it's at least 5 mins long?

Regarding last night's ratings, great start for Above Suspicion. I think it'll get over 6m tonight, and ITV will want to commision a whole series. The repeat of Demons on ITV2 brought in a good figure as well, so I'm sure ITV are happy about that.

Currently, I have ITV's new shows as:
- Caught in a Trap- flop
- Affinity- flop
- Krypton Factor- hit/unsure... 2nd episode will help me decide
- Demons- unsure... 2nd episode will help me decide
- Above Suspicion- hit

I put it in italic because of the regional news so it could be a duplicate. Will have to await official ratings for more accurate news ratings.

Ah right, yep. I reckon when the officials come out, EastEnders will drop down to 2nd, possibly even 3rd depending on Jonathan Creek's timeshift.

i wouldnt really class 'Caught in a trap' as a flop... it did OK.

Caught in a Trap did okay for a one-off considering it was up against POTC and without much promotion.

I think ITV1 should look at CBS to see how they how do things. Their shows may skew older compared to others and don't have the buzz compared to many US shows and most of their dramas are procedurals but they bring in high ratings and as a result they are usually first or second in the 18-49 and 25-54 demo. I think if ITV1 follow this formula then perhaps they could regain viewers for their dramas.

Above Suspicion is a good offering for a detective drama, and deserved to do well. However, I really thought it would get something between 7-8m with not very strong BBC1 competition, it is January after all - and yet Swarms somehow managed to get 5m, only 1.8m behind ITV1. That's nearly 2m more than I expected. And Above Suspicion probably got a boost in the 10-10.30pm slot, so the difference may have been smaller in the 9pm hour.

Maybe viewers are slowly tiring of the detective drama genre - look at the slightly disappointing ratings the 2008 run of Walking the Dead got for example. And Touch of Frost too.

Good stuff from Antiques Roadshow, back up to 8m after a Christmas dip. Will hold its own against SCD on Ice, and I think BBC1 will be stronger this year. Candleford was kept out of DOI's way last year, but together with AR, offers viewers a strong 2 hours. I can't see Ice doing as well as 2008. Hope not anyway...

I hope Above Suspicion gets over 6m tonight.

ITV seem to get really good ratings with 2 or 3 part dramas, but when it comes to full series' (Britannia High, The Palace, Harley Street) or one off's (Affinity etc.) they seem to flop.

The Come Dine With Me repeats on Sunday on More4 do pretty amazing business - thrashing Gladiators as well!

I would imagine Above Suspicion will be turned into a series. Yet again crime drama has proven where ITV's strengths lie and where the network needs to be concentrating its efforts.

I watched the 2nd episode of Above Ssupicion and the last few minutes were brilliant - electrifying, proper 'grown up' drama. The problem with ITV's longer series is that they tend to choose the most god-awful, camp, derivative formats e.g. Britannia High and Rock Rivals, which alienate rather than engage audiences.

Yep - Above Suspicion was a hit in my book, even though I'm not the biggest La Plante fan. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of it - but don't flog the genre to death, ITV...

I think the problem was they were also aimed at very narrow demographics. If you make shows that have broader appeal then you're more likely to find success.

Above Suspicion should have pulled another comfortable 6 million with only Traffic Cops as its oppostion tonight.

How do you guys think Anne Frank will do? Just watched it on iPlayer and it seems like a well made series. I commend that they've tried to make it accessible to families by being innovative with the 7pm slot - but I just don't think its going to work now we're back into the normal schedules following the holidays. If they wanted to schedule it at family hours they'd have been better off doing it in the days between Christmas and New Year or on Sundays. Unfortunately, I think its now got 'flop' written all over it.

(thanks to iloveeastenders on the soap section)

Quote:
“ITV1 won the 7pm slot with soap Emmerdale attracting 8 million and a 35% share over 30 minutes.

Coronation Street. The episode at 8.30pm had 10.6m (40.8%) and the earlier installment at 7.30pm gained 10.7m (44.7%). BBC1's EastEnders at 8pm put in a strong performance with 10m (38.5%).”

Above Suspicion did very well.

From Media Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009...ion-tv-ratings

Quote:
“TV ratings – La Plante's ITV drama grows to over 7 million viewers

ITV1 crime drama Above Suspicion gained 600,000 viewers for its second and concluding installment last night, Monday 5 January.

The two-parter by Lynda La Plante, described by ITV director of television Peter Fincham as her best work since Prime Suspect, pulled in 7.3 million viewers and a 29% share in the 9pm hour, according to unofficial overnight figures.

Above Suspicion launched on Sunday with 6.7 million viewers and a 28% share between 9pm and 10.30pm.”

Some C4 overnights from Channel 4 Sales.

Channel 4 (inc +1)

The Simpsons- 2.3m
Hollyoaks- 2m
Dispatches- 1.2m
Celebrity Big Brother- 3.8m
Surviving Gazza- 2.4m

The Gazza documentary did better than I thought, and a good figure for CBB as well.

If you make good shows more often than not people will tune in. Above Suspicion was very good and deserved its 7 million viewers. And when was the last time you saw a new drama increase its ratings with the second show?

ITV drama is looking strong, I like the look of Whitechapel and Law and Order UK could be another hit.
