Daily? How rude! Three or four times I have made comment, that's it. I think I've been relatively restrained thus far.
I note you refer back to the 2007 international race row, which has undoubtedly been an underlying cause for the general decline in BB viewership, however I think it's fair to say this series has problems of its own. It launched with nearly 6m and now it can barely scrape together 3m for the highlights, or even the evictions. Quite pitiful really.
They had a chance to make this series different but they have failed to do so. A 'funny' BB was being lined up by producers according to reports beforehand. Well I can say with complete honesty I've seen funnier ITV1 programmes. The celebrities are living in a house of luxury for a few weeks gaining bundles of free publicity, with only one goal; to be remotely entertaining. And they can't even manage that. All they do is moan and whinge because they want to go home, splash their cash and draw a line under the whole thing. Reality television? I think not. These overpaid morons are totally out of touch with reality and don't have a clue about real strife.
Then in the summer, at the very opposite end of the spectrum, a group of the most desperate and fame hungry twits you've ever seen battling it out for their 30 seconds, probably spent wearing the coat of cash on the Sunday Night Project while a similarly desperate mob descends on them like a pack of wolves for the sake of a measly tenner. Sad.
So it's not entertaining - and we established a while ago that it's no longer a reality show - so what purpose does it actually serve now?
It's legitimate grounds for discussion because it raises bigger questions for an already struggling Channel 4. Where do they go from here now their former crown jewel has well and truly lost its sparkle? Continue churning out a mediocre show for the sake of slightly better than average ratings, or axe it and hope that something better comes along?
There are two things I can say with confidence:
1) Big Brother is past it now. The controversies it has engineered in recent years have damaged it tremendously. The producers had opportunities to reinvent the series but failed to do so.
2) Big Brother at its peak was a valuable asset to Channel 4. Finding a replacement will not be easy, and may prove an impossible task.
