I know this includes +1 ratings, but thats still impressive!”

There is a big lesson for all channels in this.

Channel 4 advertised that relentlessly on every one of their channels for the past week and managed to turn another showing of something in their film library into a big hit.

Britannia High came last in its slot with 1.9m.

I am a bit surprised because I thought people would tune in to Corrie a bit early and boost it by 1/2m or so.

Corrie only got 5.8m.

Did ITV publicise that Corrie was going to be on Sunday though? But it still got beat by Antiques Roadshow which had 7.2 million!!

Strange times indeed!!

From Broadcast

Quote:
“BBC1 powered into a convincing lead at 7.15pm with Antiques Roadshow on 7.2m (27.1%) although the show lost 1.5m viewers compared to last week. The channel improved its standing even more at 8.15pm with the results show of Strictly Come Dancing on 9.4m (32.4%).

BBC2's Top Gear once again did the business with the motoring show on a sizeable 6.3m (21.8%) at 8pm. The channel managed a strong performance, even if it wasn't quite in the same league, at 9pm with Louis Theroux: Law and Disorder in Johannesburg picking up 3.6m (14.1%).

After the problems with Britannia High, ITV1 had a boost at 7.30pm with Coronation Street returning to its Sunday night slot with 5.8m (21.9%) for half an hour. The commercial network dipped again though at 8pm with its one-hour musical special Take That Come to Town on 4.2m (14.7%).”

Media Guardian is reporting 4.2 million as well and no mention of Coronation Street.

What a strange set of ratings.

Miracle on 34th Street did brilliantly - there was clearly an appetite for a bit of festive fare which C4 have guaged really well.

BBC One and Two performed very much as we've come to expect on a Sunday - with Antiques Roadshow beating off Corrie. They'll be sad to see Strictly disappear from next week - it and AR have served them very well on Sunday nights all autumn.

Terrible Sunday night for ITV once again. Brittania High slumped even more - to finish last among all terrestrials is embarassing and I think dismisses any notion that its only failed because of scheduling. I can only presume they didn't advertise the change for Coronation Street because thats the only way to explain those type of figures.

There will be a lot of confused people when they tune in later tonight and feel like they've missed something.

It seems to be the trend for the media to present the peak figures when comparing ratings-even the BBC are quoting the X Factor and SCD peaks which are far more flattering to the rival programme rather than the lower average figures.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7770112.stm

C/S figures are poor but maybe people just didnt know, however there is an ever growing tendency for half hour programmes being overwhelmed by longer opposition. Its happened with Little Dorrit. Its clear that soaps rely on habit and routine-they need to be where people expect them to be and they dont mean enough these days for people to change their routine to accommodate them.

Home Alone got 2.8m for Five. That's quite a strong figure for them and I'm glad it did well as it's a classic film

Media Guardian article re the importance of Channel 4+1 to C4. Figures for first 11 months of 2008 vs 2007:

Including C4+1, C4's overall viewing share is down 7%. But C4 on its own is down 13%.

Fantastic ratings for Channel 4 for Miracle on 34th Street, it just goes to shows that Christmas Family films will pull in great ratings though they had poor lineup after the film finished. Five did great business with Home Alone and The Pink Panther did well against Miracle.

Films seems to pull decent ratings if they are promoted properly especially family films and if it is a prequel to a sequel coming out in the cinemas. Five showed Hellboy in the week when Hellboy II was out to success.

Brilliant for C4 but i'm not surprised how well it did
ITV did really bad, they really need to sort this Sunday schedule out.

Channel 5 obviously lost it's rights to Miracle on 34th Street. I read somewhere not long ago that it appeared twice in Channel 5's all time top 20 watched shows over the years. Channel 4 obviously noticed this and put it in a similar slot.

As for Corrie, I had no idea it was on. I do think ITV should just reinstate the Sunday Corrie anyway, but if not, at least flag post it a bit better when it is randomly dropped in there.

ITV did well though to squeeze another show out of I'm a Celebrity and win the 9 slot one more time with it.

Indeed. Quite embarassing that a heavily trailed expensive ITV drama lost out to 4 repeats on the other terrestrials! Also an awful performance for Corrie, but no surprise considering ITV decided not to advertise it at all.

The only upside on ITV yesterday was the Take That special and IAC Coming Out though both were scheduled wrong imo. Considering Take That got 1m up on what the other music specials got on ITV this could have potentially got 6m in a good Saturday night slot. Also IAC Coming Out was utter drivel for primetime ITV I have to say, and I am a huge fan of IAC. IT really should have been subjected to ITV2, whatever the ratings are like on ITV1.

Another great Sunday for BBC1 aswell as BBC2 and FIVE. It is surprising me that repeats of Long Way Down and Wild China are getting as good a rating when they were first shown in their 8pm/9pm slots.

Fantastic performance from Miracle on 34th Street-2m more than I expected, but everything fell apart for CH4 after with VERY lazy scheduling.

IAC won it's slot. I don't see what the problem is tbh.

I don't think anyone was criticising its ratings performance which was clearly more than adequate, just saying that it seemed a bit of a cheap filler for a prime Sunday night slot. Its the type of show you'd usually expect to see on ITV2 or on at another time.

I just thought it was a poorly made programme and the direction in which ITV1 shouldn't be heading in. The main show itself is fine, but effectively a spin off shouldn't be on ITV1 imo.

The success of the family films on Channel 4 and Five should encourage BBC One and ITV1 to put family films out at the weekends. Elf should bring in a substancial audience for Channel 4 though I don't think the repeat of Britain's Got The Pop Factor will do that well.

I'm surprised no one is showing the classic musicals like The Wizard of Oz, Oliver! and Annie which IMO would pull in a decent audience if shown near Christmas.

I dont think anybody could find fault with that.

Its just it epitomises ITV's dependance on Simon Cowell/Ant and Dec type programming. BH and Take That (both trailed beyond belief) and even the jaggurnaut that is Corrie are shown a clean set of heals by what many people seem to think are dated, unfashionable shows over on the BBC.

Just goes to show how well an ordinary episode of EastEnders did to get 5.5m against the Dancing on Ice final on a Sunday evening earlier this year.

Particularly as the Dancing final attracted a much larger audience than last night's Antiques Roadshow.

I am truely shocked that Antiques Roadshow has lost nearly a third of its audience in under a month.

Its falling faster than the price of modern art
