Something for everyone in last night's overnights, then:
X-Factor groupies:
Got the Christmas present they wanted most - the top-rated show of 2008. Can't see anything beating that now, and it should ease past the BGT Final figures.
Well done all of you, and Merry Christmas. With ITV's record, you can expect a bumper fix of your favourite show next year, probably starting in July with 10 weeks of audition shows filling 2 hours each Saturday, and 3 hours of live shows up to Christmas. ITV is up sh!t creek financially, and with ad revenues plummeting, it will need to fill more and more of its airtime with cheap TV like this, BGT and Celeb.
Enjoy...
Those for whom TXF represents the dumbing-down/Americanisation of British telly:
It didn't do as well as feared. About 0.5m better than I thought it would over the hour, but peaked somewhat short of what I expected, not even breaching 15m let alone 16m. With the Press Centre predicting 15m (which means they hoped for 16m+), they will be disappointed to see a "peak peak" of 14.6m. I think the Champions League Final got the same as that didn't it?
It's a fantastic performance, but not exactly earth-shattering or record-breaking.
Heartening to see BBC1 hold up well on ITV's "Christmas Day", and BBC2 pull some decent numbers too. Kinda restores your faith a bit...
SCD fans
On ITV's "Christmas Day", it's great to see SCD pull 10m with its main show, and probably 9m+ for its somewhat farcical results show. Should be a perfectly respectable 11-12m on the cards next Saturday, which will be astonishing for a show that just doesn't get the blanket media coverage that XF gets.
And the Beeb clearly did the right thing last night, even if it became a farce. Hopefully the Beeb will get things right for next September - sort the scoring system out to avoid this happening again, and probably have more couples from the start of a run of the same length, leaving possibly 5/6 couples still in it by the semi-finals stage with more than 1 eviction in the last 2 weeks or so, so if people drop out, there's at least the insurance policy that there will never be a 3 couple semi/2 couple final.
To all the XF groupies no doubt celebrating SCD "getting 7.3m", then hopefully we'll get some proper figures through in the next day or so which will confirm the actual 8.59-9.29 overnights for BBC1 last night and put that bit of nonsense to bed.
ITV1:
The stranglehold on the business end of the Top 10 for 2008 can mask what has been a poor year, with falling revenues, a failing schedule, and an embarrassing string of high-profile flops, probably more this year than ever before in its illustrious history.
At least the lowest common denominator stuff can still pull in big audiences, and the 'Asda-fication' of its output can continue next year.
The cupboard's bare though for the next 3 weeks, other than Fat Teens In Love and other such festive treats. I suspect it's time to put on the tin hats now until DoI returns.
Move along from this thread now, not much more for you to see here...
BBC:
After 5 months, at least a bit of respite from the XF-BGT franchise until it resumes in May. Like with all its other hit shows, ITV can be guaranteed to kill the golden goose before long and viewers will then tire of the Cowell contest format. Look at Millionaire, once a 19m behemoth, now being beaten by Holby City every Tuesday.
It's all about the Beeb now until January, a chance to score some big wins with an excellent Christmas schedule of popular family programming and films that ITV could only ever dream of putting out.
Will be interesting to see how the BBC1 v ITV1 shares compare for Saturday 13th December and Thursday 25th December....
