That scheduled worked amazingly well last year and a deviation from something like that would sum up BBC One under Jay Hunt - a tale of poor scheduling...

Who knows, I may be proved wrong - but can you see it doing well if there is any deviation from that or similar?”

That's a good schedule. Isn't it also possible for EE 5.50 and Wallace and Gromit to be the other way round as well? Last year there was nothing between the 1st Doctor Who and EE.

ITV Press Centre currently has Corrie at 8pm, but I think that will change depending on what the BBC dictates.

That's what I thought, now way they'll clash on the big day. And according to someone on the Christmas telly thread BBC1 will finalise their Christma schedule tomorrow.

I think ITV had already copyrighted (or whatever the TV term is) Dancing on Ice as a series, so the best BBC could do was a one of special.

Like Britain's Got Talent, ITV had formatted something for air, then took forever to actually broadcast it. Indeed, I think Britain's Got Talent was in the pipeline before America's Got Talent - yet America's Got Talent was broadcast first.

I agree. I can't see BBC1 taking away the EastEnders lead in from Doctor Who, especially as they appeal to the same kind of audience. It would make more sense to have Matter of Loaf and Death before the first EastEnders.

"The series was intended to air before America's Got Talent but was thoroughly postponed, and was also intentially meant to be host by Paul O'Grady although he resigned shortly after his transfer from ITV to Channel 4. Ant and Dec were later decided as replacement hosts. David Hasselhoff and Cheryl Cole were lined up as judges, but resigned before the program was meant to broadcast, meaning Amanda Holden was brought in as a replacement."

I believe that ITV piloted BGT with Paul O'Grady in 2005 but when he defected to Channel 4, they delayed it so Simon Cowell took it to NBC and reworked as America's Got Talent which was successful and lead to other Got Talents across the world.

Is this the Ratings Thread or the How Many Times Can You Rejig A Potential BBC Christmas Day Schedule Thread?

Hard to tell tonight. So far I think we're up to about 15 different versions, each with the exact same shows but in a slightly different order. Riveting stuff

I was actually right about something.

I'm glad Ant and Dec do it instead of Paul O'Grady. As much as I like Paul O'Grady I think he would have made the show too cabaret-like.

I'm just waiting for BBC1 to release a schedule that bears no resemblance to all the guesses, and have everyone scratching their heads in confusion.

Just getting back to the actual ratings, rather than Christmas day predictions, why didn't BBC One put the Michael Palin special on last night, allowing ITV their final (?) Sunday on top. They could then have run Wallander for the three Sunday's running up til Christmas. It could have grabbed some of the people who would have been watching I'm a Zeleb for the last couple of week.

Yeah, in 1986 part 2 of the Christmas Day EastEnders was broadcast at 10.00pm however in 1991 the only episode of EastEnders to be shown on Christmas Day was broadcast at 2.30pm just before The Queen.

Also, in 1994, Christmas Day fall on a Sunday and the beeb still showed the EastEnders Omnibus.

Part of the problem apart from O'Grady was also that the Controller of Entertainment who commissioned the pilot left ITV shortly after and it got caught up in the change over so Syco took it to the US. I think it actually made it on air in France and possibly some other countries before the UK.

Although I always thought Piers Morgan was planned for the show as oppose to Hasselhoff. The Cheryl Cole thing was well known, though.

I mean, if the ITV groupies were screaming excitedly yesterday, almost to orgasm, about X Factor knocking BBC1's offerings down to 3-4m, then the combined forces of BBC1 and BBC2 getting medieval on ITV1's sorry ass last night is a bigger talking point surely?

2m and 2.7m for two prime time Sunday offerings?

In the slots ITV once completely owned with Emmerdale, Corrie and Heartbeat pulling 11m, 12m, 13m and more?

Wow. Michael Grade, Trevor MacDonald, Jeremy Beadle, Simon Cowell, Cannon and Ball, Judith Chalmers, Bet Lynch, Hilda Ogden, Michael Barrymore. Did you see that, Simon Cowell? Your boys just took ONE HELL OF A BEATING!!!

Great start to Wallander, I thought it would get something around 6m, but i found it a very difficult watch - I feared after Wet Tits' performance on Saturday that it could end up with 3m, so it's satisfying that so many sought it out and stuck with it.

Hm, Corrie hasn't done well when dropped into the schedule without fanfare - didn't it get 5m or something at Easter?

BBC1 owns Sundays now, so it will take more than Corrie and an extended promo for Take That's new album to win back viewers. I can see Corrie getting about 6m and TT 3-4m tops - people want to see SCD and TG in the 8pm slot on Sundays now, and ITV1 is an irrelevance there for the time being.

The most important schedule for the most important TV viewing day of the year. Of course it's going to get talked about.

I think DOI could be a mistake for ITV, especially if it starts just as SCD is finishing - talk about overkill. It will also show up just what a pale imitation of the master DOI is! And it'll get trounced by EastEnders and shouldn't trouble the Royles.

Still, better to air it on Christmas Day than damage BBC1's Christmas gems on another night...

I think Piers Morgan was always going to be involved though Hasselholff would have good choice if Cowell wasn't on BGT. Apparently Noel Edmonds was approached too but I think that was a tabloid runour.

When did those 3 shows get those ratings? 1993?

Here Comes the Boys was actually for a good cause which may remove it from the usual 'bad ratings = rubbish programme' rule

As for Christmas Day, if ITV1 is going to go with something like this (those in bold seemingly set in stone, the rest my guesses)....:

ITV1:
3.00 The Queen
3.10 Harry Potter and the ….
5.50 News
6.00 You’ve Been Framed
6.30 TV Burp
7.00 Emmerdale
8.00 Coronation St
9.00 Dancing on Ice

10.30 Benidorm
11.00/11.30 News
11.15/11.45 Film: TBA

Then BBC1 has to run something like:

BBC1:
2.00 TOTP
3.00 HM The Queen
3.10 Film: Madagascar
4.40 TBA
5.45 News
5.55 EastEnders
6.25 Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death
6.55 Doctor Who: The Next Doctor
8.00 Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special
9.00 EastEnders
9.30 The Royle Family: The New Sofa
10.30 Gavin & Stacey
11.30 News
11.40 Film: TBA

Problem with this is that it doesn't leave time for Shark Tale, Madagascar and the early evening news before the main evening certainties start - and BBC1 has to run largely 'on the hour' if ITV1 has a triumvirate of Emmerdale, Coro St and SCD on Ice at 7/8/9pm. So I don't know what could fill the 65 mins from 4.40 - perhaps My Family and an SCD Preview show? Seems a waste when My Family would do much better in a prime slot.

A Hole in the Wall double bill?

Could be an interesting battle. But that ITV1 line-up is nothing really special, is it? Could be what was once a typical Sunday night.

Don't be such a cantankerous little sod. You know my issue was with it being discussed so extensively in THIS thread rather than it being discussed at all.

Also I would argue that Boxing Day's schedule is just as important if not more important, as for me at least it is the day of the year when I watch the most telly. A lot of families including mine choose to go out and have Christmas dinner together on Xmas Day so telly is less important during the day.

I've noticed that some people here are pro-BBC and some are pro-ITV. Why do you prefer one channel over the others? Is it that you work for them or just prefer the programmes?

Actually Coronation Street and Heartbeat were getting far closer to 20 million than 12 in 1993. And that just shows how far things have changed-these shows are more Ben Nevis than Everest these days.
