This Eurovision effort sounds like Grease Is The Word. Lets just throw out any hopeless concept because we need something to fill a few months. A singing show with a different (and awful) prize. Plus talent shows on BBC1 are almost guaranteed to get ratings... aren't they?”

Any public talent format that does not involve Cowell, auditions, boot camps crying etc etc is doomed to be considered second rate.

Whether your a fan or not, Simon Cowell somehow has come to own an entire genre.

The BBC are driven to do these seemingly endless versions of the talent format simply because they have become todays light entertainment. But unless they blatantly copy X Factor, in line with what you say, these shows just become schedule fillers. Eurovision has a unique appeal but I dont think it will extend to sorting out who we send next for the zero rating.

It is quite remarkable how Cowell has established a dominance over the talent show format, which as you rightly say, is just the modern form of the age-old light entertainment show. For whatever reason, people just want and expect these things to be competetive - and they want to invest in characters and be in charge of their fates.

People bemoan the dominance of these shows yet genuine variety shows like 'For One Night Only' never perform as well. Indeed, when the Talent shows move away from their competetive elements (ie, Strictly's Sunday night results show) to include more additional performances, they're accused of "padding".

Judging by the ratings, the competetive format is what people want from their light entertainment, so it shouldn't be surprising to see shows like the new Eurovision one.

Well, the annual 5 month long search for the one-hit wonder who will become Christmas No 1 and boost Cowell's bank balance seems to do good business for ITV1....

I don't think it will be a "mega hit" anyway - I just said it will probably out-rate Demons, which it looks like being up against.

The problem is that last years BBC Eurovision competition selected one of those one-hit wonders whose 15 minutes had long since passed!

I'd assume it will be "normal people" entering this one? As oppose to the procession of reality rejects, ex soapstars and Katie Price that have featured on "Making Your Mind up"?

I still think both EE and DOI will get 8m.

Corrie will be the most watched soap of the day. Doctor Who will be the most watched show overall of the day imo.

With DOI on for so long though and being a pre-recorded standalone show with little point behind it perhaps some viewers may get bored and go channel hopping? ”

I think the wild card on Christmas Day is Wallace & Gromit as it will be going against Dancing On Ice as well. Will people stick with DOI or will more of them watch the first new W&G adventure in over a decade?

I'm not sure about Doctor Who at 6pm, it'll probably get 12 million when the consolidated ratings come out. I base this on EastEnders getting nearly 12 million at 6.20pm last year on Christmas Day.

It's too difficult to guess this year.

C4 Friday ratings
8.00pm- Jamie At Home Christmas Special: 2.12m
9.00pm- Peter Kay's Britain's Got An Extra Pop Factor And Then Some 2 + 1: 2.77m
10.00pm- The It Crowd: Fiendface: 2.05m
10.35pm- Eddie Izzard - Circle: 0.76m

Sunday
6.30pm- Oliver Twist: 1.91m
9.00pm- The Sunday Night Project: 1.70m
10.00pm- The Charlotte Church Show: 1.63m

Lower than I expected for Britain's Got The Pop Factor, but Jamie at Home did well considering it was a repeat from last year. The IT Crowd is up on its usual audience.

All of CH4's christmas specials seem to have performed very well for them-as I expected for Britain's Got The Pop Factor, because it just wasn't advertised enough and was in the wrong slot-it should have been given a Sunday slot again, but 2.77m is a strong rating for CH4 nevertheless.

Also what is interesting is that both Gordon Ramsays Xmas Special & BGTPF have both given The IT Crowd some new viewers.

The Sunday Night Project & Charlotte Church Christmas Specials seemed to perform decently with 1.7m and 1.6m respectively.

Looking at the all hours shares for yesterday, BBC1 got 19.7% and ITV1 got 14.7% according to C4 Sales, so expect Clash of the Santas and probably Titchmarsh to have flopped.

Meanwhile, the Foyle's War repeat on Friday got 3.8m (19%).

Select individuals aged 4+ and then look at the column on the far right.

Looking at BBC1 19.7% doesn't seem that large so maybe ITV didn't do that badly across the day.

Clash of the Santas got 5.4m (24%).

I was wrong about it flopping then, but ITV's daytime shows must have done badly.

Good rating for ITV1. Titchmarsh might have flopped with 10%.

They had two family films on yesterday afternoon (Casper & ET) which I thought would have done quite well.

Broadcast and Media Guardian are claiming that SCD got 11.6m and 12.0m for its shows (well, Broadcast are saying 11.9m for the results but they've proved plenty of times in the past that they can't round up).

Therefore, I think that the 11.7m and 12.2m we got yesterday took into account the overrun.
