I reckon Who will top the day which I'm pleased about. I don't know why people are predicting a great performance from W&G as like EastEnders it's up against DOI. Expect no more than 8-9m for what goes up against that.

I hope I'm wrong and EE still holds up well. I want the BBC to have a good night as they have the better programmes.”

You still think DOI will do well don't you? I predict no more than 4m for that

I really can't see Dancing on Ice doing anything to harm BBC1's ratings at all. But I may be eating my own words come Boxing Day! We will see

Fabulous ratings for Gavin and Stacey !”

So pleased My Family done well, I always expected it to win its slot comfortably but i thought it would of been a bit closer.

Shrek the halls got a decent figure but Toy Story 2 deserved maybe 1m more.

Thanks rzt - a Christmas Day post!

Fantastic ratings for BBC1 last night - especially Gavin and Stacey, I never though it'd do that well! And that must be HIGNFY's highest rating in a long while.

The soaps are down thanks to tougher competition, and Midsomer didn't do as well as I expected, but it's still a good performance and way up on last year's Christmas Eve offering.

Deal or No Deal seemed to benefit from having a special show, I can't remember the last time it hit 3m.

Shrek The Halls did brilliantly for a repeat against Coronation St.

Great to see some ratings on Christmas Day and WOW at BBC1-their Christmas takeover seems to have started! Much higher than expected for the 3 comedies. Midsomer held up very well and it was exactly what I predicted on the RPG. Also higher than expected for YBF. It seems BBC1 are going to have a great Christmas, but ITV are going to hold up much better than they have done in recent years.

EastEnders and Corrie tied on 8.4m but EE has the higher share Interesting.

Great rating for Deal or No Deal. Then again it does seem more than a little odd to me how so far during this week of specials more money has been won than there has in about 3 months of normal Deal or No Deal LOL.

Great Ratings for BBC1, not really from EastEnders, but the rest have done very well!

6.8 for G&S is Amazing, the BBC must be very pleased with that! My Family, Have I got News for you and Shrek also did really well!

Solid ratings all around - apart from the soaps, ITV held up solidly with YBF and Midsomer. Fantastic ratings for BBC One, everything about 6m from 19:30 to 23:00!

That was a good figure for EE, considering it does not normally air on a Wednesday.

I will not be making anymore predictions. Those of you that said My Family would do well against Midsomer Murders you were absolutely right. And that ladies and gentlemen is why the BBC keep commissioning it. Also what a great rating for Have I Got News For You, that must be the highest in quite some time.

Also Gavin & Stacey did the business despite what I thought looking at ratings for the repeats.

Is anybody revising their guesses for tonight's ratings?

Generally, a very strong night. I'm surprised that My Family and Have I Got News? topped 7 million and Gavin and Stacey did brilliantly to hold on to the lead in. A great night for BBC One - they clearly judged the mood right for some light hearted comedy on Christmas Eve. How do they rank on the list of 2008's top performing comedy shows?

I'd expected Midsommer to do slightly better, but considering the surprisingly high ratings on the other side, it looks like it performed admirably.

The soaps performances were the one blot on the record last night. They're all down on where they would expect to be. Is this more evidence of people looking for fun and entertainment more these days (see improved performance of talent shows) rather than more glum drama?

If it is, it bodes well for Doctor Who, Wallace and Gromit and Dancing On Ice tonight, rather than the soaps...

Merry Christmas everyone

It was Christmas Eve. Hardly any old 'wednesday'.

That's good for EE since it's not normally on on a Wednesday. I expected Corrie to do better as it was in its normal timeslot and had quite a big episode last night arguably bigger than what's going to happen tonight strange enough.

BBC1 did well, big surprise for me is how well Gavin and Stacey did
The soaps didn't do too well, Corrie is the worst effected because that episode is their biggest over the Xmas period.

Excellent ratings for BBC One's comedy line-up. I know EastEnders is not usually on on Wednesday nights, but I feel the ratings for it and Coronation St were a little lower than they should be.

19:00 to 22:30 - BBC One vs. ITV1 - Average
6.78m vs. 6m

In case we didn't already know, victory for BBC last night, but ITV held up well.

ITV held up very well and all they had to do was exactly the same thing they do every single Wednesday and put on an hour of soaps. It's quite depressing actually, they don't have to put in an effort and they know they don't have to.

Even in the 70's and 80's when they would more often than not lose the Christmas ratings battle they at least tried a bit harder. Nowadays it's all about profit margins and getting maximum ratings with minimum effort.

I know this has been forced on ITV because they are advertising led but it's like the accountants are taking over TV.

There was a brand new episode of Midsomer Murders which wouldn't usually air 'on a Wednesday'

That's true but I suppose I just long for the days when BBC1 & ITV didn't bombard us with soaps all the time. Most people like them but I try to avoid like the plague, and if it wasn't for that hour of soaps ITV would have done worse yesterday. And BBC1 don't get off either because they're putting on extra episodes of EastEnders. I don't completely hate soap but it takes up too much of the schedule, even on Christmas Day there is no escape!!!
