That was poor for Affinity. I just hope the other ITV dramas do better, because like rzt said, if they all flop, for financial gain, ITV might as well stick with cheap programming that brings in good ratings. It will be interesting to see how 'Demons' performs this Saturday night.

It was a bad figure for The Royal as well. The programme may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it brought in decent ratings for ITV so I have no idea why they messed with it in the first place.

This may be a little bit of a far fetched idea.. but what if ITV brought back London's Burning for a Sunday night slot of 9pm? Didn't it used to be very popular back in the day? It could bring in strong ratings for Sunday nights.

The One Show only ever seems to pose a threat when it's acting as a lead-in to EE. The ratings tend to be artificially boosted.

It is true that The One Show's overnight ratings on Tuesday nights are inflated.

But the worrying thing for ITV is that The One Show is now consistently getting over 5 million on every single day of the week.

Its audience has grown about 1 million over the space of a year. It's possible that there might be a similar growth in 2009, eventually making The One Show just a whisker away from Emmerdale.

After last night's figure, I wonder if the 30-minute HIGNFY repeats (usually shown on BBC Two on Mondays at 10pm) might move to Sundays at 9.30pm on BBC One in the spring. They'd fill the gap after a 90-minute 8pm drama such as George Gently.

It'd make a change from The Vicar of Dibley.

BBC Two could keep the extended HIGNFY repeat on Saturday nights.

Showing it at Christmas was a mistake, when much of ITV1's evening line-up consists of repeats one night, new drama the next. Viewers just assume ITV has given up, with repeats or rubbish not deserving of a better slot - so putting Affinity out last night was a waste. I'm sure it would have got 4-5m if shown in the same slot a month earlier or later.


Neither network has an inspiring line-up, but I don't think BBC1's is at all bad - the football will outrate Dr Who Confidential and probably Total Wipeout (this week), but I can see BBC1 winning the rest of the evening.


The Christmas Day late-night extended version also got 0.6m on BBC2, so that's about 12.4m in total.


Or is it just that viewers do prefer BBC1 more noticeably at this time of year than in other months? BBC1's output largely consists of comedy, films and panel games; ITV1's of reality shows and soap. For the reasons cited above, plus the endless sofas and sales adverts, viewers simply desert ITV1 at Christmas.

OK, so I had a bit of time on my hands this afternoon (a bit too much, you could say) and so i decided to do a bit of BARB-trawling. I've compiled a list of all the new programmes first aired in 2008 to top 6 million. I thought it might be interesting and could give an indication where things have gone right and wrong for the channels this year.

Firstly, a couple of notes on some methodology:

-I've excluded films, sports events and coverage of events. etc.

- I've also excluded some series which have new titles but are essentially the same / a continuation of previous shows (ie, I'd Do Anything and Ashes to Ashes). Its difficult to accurately define this, though. Do we consider "Life in Cold Blood" a new show in its own right, or just a continuation of the "Life" strand?

- I had a bit of bother trying to classify some of the one-off variety shows. For instance, I've included Girls Alout Party and Happy Birthday Brucie!, because they were made to be TV shows, but excluded We Are Most Amused because I thought it was an external event that was meerly covered for TV. Its a thin dividing line and very much open to debate.

- Obviously, the list includes some shows which debuted well then fell away (ie. Bonekickers ) and not shows which have been seen before but have grown to mass audiences this year (ie. Gavin and Stacey) - but it does at least give some overall impression of the success of new shows in general.

I may well have missed some shows out, especially those over the Christmas period since the last set of Barb officials. I also expect I've stuffed up a couple of times regarding whether certain shows were new this year or not. Do point out if you spot anything I've missed!

A total of 20, made up of 13 BBC One shows and 7 ITV1 shows. I thought this perhaps offered some proof in our discussions about the success (or otherwise) of ITV's relaunch. It appears they struggled to find new shows that really connected with the big audiences and were predominantly reliant on their established hits. BBC One seemed to generate a few more new hits - though the number of new shows topping 6m overall seems a tad disappointing.

Honest got a good premiere audience figure, and definitely should be recommissioned. Wednesday nights are hard slots, as at the time, there were Champions League matches, well rated Channel 4 offerings & BBC1 shows that were appealing to the masses. The Honest episode which went down to 3.3m was against a BBC live International football match, and this is why it is generally seen as a failure.

Now, seeing BBC does not have any live football coverage to speak of, WHY has Honest not been granted another series?

Actually, I've realised ITV hasn't aired this series yet...

Distant Shores, starring Peter Davidson, has not aired, and that could be brilliant for Sunday nights.

Also, these are the re-commissions I feel are worthy for 2009:-

- Trinny & Susannah - ITV2 (self-entitled 24 part series for Wednesday nights from 8pm)
- Honest - ITV1 (Six parts, on Tuesday nights)
- Duel - ITV2 (Twelve parts on Sunday nights as alternative to ITV1's cosy schedule)
- Thank God You're Here (Second series airing on ITV2 at 10pm on Sunday nights to gain stability)
- Extreme Slimmers on Wednesday nights at 9pm on ITV2
- In The Line of Fire to air at 9pm on ITV4
- Total Emergency to air at 9pm on ITV4
- Police, Camera, Action to get even more coverage on ITV1 with a few specials
- More 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' Monday night specials.

I would imagine Peter Fincham has mixed feelings over the success of the One Show given that it was his idea I think to revamp the early evening. The One Show was born out of detailed research by the BBC as to what viewers might want at 7.00. And it has saved the Beeb alot of headscratching as to what to run at that time.
There are millions of viewers available, only 6 or 7 million watch Emmerdale-its just finding something for the majority that is the non-soap audience.

I thought Honest was a decent drama - one of the best new ITV dramas of 2008. Its ratings for the final few episodes really weren't deserving for a drama that had a good storyline running throughout - such a shame if it hasn't been recommissioned, as I felt it worked well and could have developed into a little good ratings earner for ITV.

I strongly doubt ITV2 and ITV4 would have the budget to fund the above programmes. The budgets of ITV2 and ITV4 are tiny compared to ITV1.

For the 6 months to 30 June 2008, the ITV1 programme budget was £490m.

In comparison for the same 6 months, the total programme budget for ALL ITV digital channels added together (ie ITV2 + ITV3 + ITV4 + CITV + M&M) was £55m.

I'm sure Distant Shores has been broadcast. I remember watching it. That or I decided to muddle it up The Last Detective with it at one point.

I'm hoping Fincham is just holding off a revamp for new year. Personally, I would've changed ITV1 as soon as possible to try and revitalise it a bit, but another January revamp, though desperate, makes sense. It's definitely needed.

I wonder whether GMTV's *relaunch* next week will push them ahead of Breakfast. Doubt it myself.

However when you see ITV2,3, 4 & CITV getting a combined multichannel share oif 6% versus about 18% for ITV1 its clear where the better investment is.

That's interesting that BBC1's is much lower than usual and considering it had a big film premiere todays figures should be interesting...

BBC2, ITV1, CH4 and FIVE are all up on last Mondays performances.

And regarding GMTV I can't see the relaunch making much of a difference tbh-people have already made their choices about which breakfast show they want to watch and won't change now.

The first series was shown, and imo was very good. A second series was made but has subsequently been shelved. I think it's been shown in other countries though.

How far is it behind Breakfast?

I find that very interesting, and suggests BBC One didn't do well yesterday at all..... if that was Primetime Shares fair enough, but the fact that BBC One got beaten in all day shares is interesting.

My guess is that both "Christmas on the Frontline" (19:00) and "Superman Returns" (20:30) both flopped. I seriously hope the shares aren't wrong.

BBC News wasn't on until 22:55, while News at Ten was on as normal at 22:00, could NaT break the 4m barrier for the first time in a while? I can hope.

A movie premiere that they didn't promote. So I can't say I'm shocked if they didn't do too well yesterday. I saw more trailers for Caroline Quentin's new sitcom than for Superman Returns.

Don't quote me () but last time I remember it was something like 1.2m vs 0.6m, though they could have been going through a rough patch or something.
