Doubt it but from a purely shallow perspective Emma Crosby is much easier on the eye than her predecessor.

BBC also making budget cuts I see: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a1394...dget-cuts.html

“Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman has admitted that the BBC Two motoring show will be hit by severe budget cuts next year, reports The Guardian.”

Also, are we gonna get any more ratings from yesterday?

It was a good night for ITV.

From Media Guardian

Quote:
“TV ratings: Millionaire special beats Superman

Brandon Routh in Superman Returns, which was beaten by a Who Wants to be a Millionaire? special.

ITV1's Olympian-studded Who Wants to be a Millionaire? special attracted almost 5 million viewers, proving to be kryptonite for the return of Superman on BBC1 and besting an outing by Rupert Everett as Sherlock Holmes last night, Monday 29 December.

The Olympic Gold Medallist Special of the quiz show may have been missing the biggest names such as Chris Hoy and Rebecca Adlington, but the array of winners from Beijing was strong enough for ITV1 to win the 9pm slot with 4.9m viewers and an audience share of almost 21%.

The gold medallists outshone the BBC1 screening of Superman Returns, starring Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth, which attracted 4.4m viewers and an average 19% share between 8.30pm and 10.55pm.”

What do you know? Supports an idea that perhaps Who Wants to be a Millionaire? should be on Tuesday nights until Champions League finishes at 9pm.

That's quite a disappointing rating for EastEnders. I thought it would have been top yesterday, maybe even edging towards the 10 million mark. That second Corrie did well to tie against EastEnders, because it seemed to have tougher opposition.

Superman Returns rated much worse than I expected. I thought it would have got at least 5 million, but it wasn't promoted well at all. Also it's not a particularly good film, so it looks like people opted for Millionaire and Sherlock Holmes.

Millionaire's rated quite well of late, maybe ITV will consider putting it in the 9pm slot in the future. It would bring in 4.5m minimum I would think, which is significantly higher than what some of ITV's 9pm shows have got of late.

EastEnders is going back into it's usual routine of having solid ratings after Christmas. Maybe the New Year's Day editions will have blockbuster ratings. And I've said it before Superman Returns had virtually no promotion so I'm not shocked it rated so poorly.

They packed in too many films, Superman Returns should have aired on a Bank Holiday Monday soon.

Poor for Superman Returns really - though I suppose its a bit isolated on a Monday night between Christmas and New Year. It really should have been promoted between the Boxing Day blockbusters. WWTBAM is as consistent as ever and can pull a regular 4-5 million in whatever slot ITV need - not to be sniffed at in this day and age.

EastEnders was average and it looks like people have started to revert back to their normal Monday viewing habits with Corrie back on top for its Monday double-header. It'll be interesting to see if people return to EastEnders over New Year. Last year it pulled almost 9 million for a 40 minute episode including a 30 min clash with Emmerdale - so we'd surely expect figures to be pushed comfortably above 10 million, this year?

Sherlock Holmes did very well on BBC2, No other channel was offering a good'old drama in the same time slot.

Superman suffered from being against the 8.30 CS and near zero promotion!

EE did not do aswell as I expected, but CS (7.30) did very well!

I think i was more a case of too little promotion, for me Boxing Day had too many films on BBC1.

Low ratings all round, apart from EE and Corrie, and particularly the Superman Returns premiere - repeats of the original films were still getting up to 10m viewers a few Christmases ago. It's not as if Millionaire pulled a massive audience - it's down on what it got against Holby last week.

People obviously decided to watch DVDs or recordings last night. Or a very large number chose to watch the second Corrie and watch a timeshifted recording of Superman from the start when Corrie finished....

Just reading some posts back from this time last year, and it's interesting to see what people were predicting for 2008:

Will Doctor Who's 2008 xmas special hit the same heights without Kylie and if ITV comes up with a stronger Christmas Night schedule? The Olympics are not taking place in a viewer-friendly timezone...

I would think Coro St is the most likely top show of 2008 unless EE can pull off its remarkable Christmas Day coup again.

I reckon 9m could see a show into the Top 10 this year.”

Hardly anyone could have predicted that the talent shows would have been so popular this year! I personally thought there would be some kind of decline because effectively they've been going on for 7/8 years now. But clearly the public haven't got bored of them. I'll be looking at the ratings for Dancing on Ice 2009 quite closely, because I think its ratings will give a good indication of how the other talent shows will rate in 2009.

Regarding the Top 10, it's pretty good that all the shows are above the 10 million mark. Big surprises for me are Antiques Roadshow, Wallace and Gromit and the return to form of I'm a Celebrity.

Some people predicted the outcome of ITV's Sunday changes well, though:

It seems a brave move to me, but I'm not sure it's going to pay dividends for ITV1.

Sunday nights have suddenly got more possibilities now for the BBC. Whilst DOI may prove popular for the next 3 months, what goes there the rest of the year?

ITV1's Sunday schedule has been built around a successful anchor in Coro and Emmerdale - without them, the 8pm slot suddenly looks harder for ITV, indeed the whole night does.

Unconstrained by soap, the BBC have a real opportunity to do something interesting and distinctive on Sundays - family drama, sitcom, entertainment, films, sport.

What with this, and bringing back News at Ten into a battle it cannot hope to win regularly now the BBC Ten has made that slot its own, I can't help thinking ITV have just scored a mighty own goal.”

What are ITV waiting for? They really need to bring back the soaps (or at least Corrie) to Sundays ASAP in my opinion.

Yes Soaps need to be back on Sundays but at a later time. Emmerdale on a Sunday at 7pm is too early.

I find this post interesting considering some of the Xmas ratings and the Top 2008 ratings:

Only 5 years ago, Documentaries were getting 15 million viewers. Heartbeat was getting 12 million viewers. Nowadays documentaries get 7 million viewers maximum- more commonly under 6 million.

Imagine what the ratings will be in 5 years time. We'll be saying it's good for soaps to get 6 million viewers!”

Although most of it is accurate, soaps can get scraped off the "more than 10 million" list apart from at Xmas.

2008 doesent seem to have been as bleak as Rzt projected last year.

We have Film, Comedy, Sci-fi and Documentry (AR) in the top 10 up there with the soaps and reality, all exceeding 10m. Interesting also 2007 and 2008 have both seen year on year increases in terms of the top rated program. 2006's top rated show also exceeded 2005's.

Well that's a bit of a surprise to see ITV win yesterday quite comfortably, even with the soaps. And when was the last time Millionaire won its slot? The show seems to have found some new viewers over Christmas-maybe this is due to the celeb versions, but whatever it is it's nice to see the show have some life left in it yet. A 9pm move wouldn't be a bad idea aswell. I would have thought Superman Returns would have dented Corrie, but the other way round with Corrie back as the No1 soap in terms of first showings.

A repeat of the Sherlock Holmes thing performed much better than I expected. CH4 held up well with its fillers, before BB starts and FIVE managed to stay above 1 million from 8-11.20pm.

Now I'd like to see the ratings for ITV NaT...

---

Regarding the top ten my shocks are the same as rzt's with W&G, AR and probably the biggest shock being IAC creeping back into the top 10!

Be interesting to see the 5 mins breakdowns for last night.

With Millionaire hardly setting the world alight with less than 5m, I wonder if Superman did particularly badly when Corrie was on (say 3.5m), took the lead at 9pm and posted a healthy audience for a while, but then lost viewers as it drifted towards its 10.55pm conclusion - for a family film (I assume - have never seen it) it was a late slot and a long running one.

The average of 4.4m over 2.5 hrs including 30 mins against Corrie may not be quite as disastrous as it seems.

EDIT: Did multi-channel really have a 35% share between 9-10pm last night, for example?

I wonder, when Wallace and Gromit is repeated on Thursday, is it too much to expect it to get 6m viewers, giving it a total of more than 20m viewers!?! I think that would be great if it did happen.
