Yes that surprised me as well, but then I remembered that the BBC were marketing it as their answer to ER (which was at its peak at that point) and it also made a convenient summer filler. I think it got moved to the graveyard slot pretty swiftly.

Wow... excellent night for BBC1! Not bad for the Krypton Factor though either considering it was up against EE, and ITV1's EE alternative never usually passes the 4m mark.

Do BARB count people watching again when combing figures for repeats?

Are the 7.2m who watched last night new viewers? Barb must know which boxes watched it before.

Just Amazing. A repeat of a show which 14.3m people saw still beats Emmerdale when repeated

Low share, or is it just me?

If that's right, that means 27.4m people were watching TV between 20:30 and 21:00.

No BARB won't combine the two ratings. But still: 22m from two showings is outstanding.

EastEnders isn't usually shown at 8.30pm, and more people watching yesterday as it was New Year's Day holiday. Still, quite disappointing ratings for EE. I thought it would rate higher.

No these are separate audiences also the repeat wasn't shown in the same week. In the old day BARB used to add repeat viewing figures together, so they'd combine the Eastenders rating on Tuesday & Thursday with their omnibus rating on Sunday, or Neighbours lunchtime & evening ratings. I always thought that that this was inaccurate and thankfully they changed it.

I thought EastEnders would have done better, but it wasn't like a major character leaving and BBC1 didn't really promote it as a major storyline with trailers starting only a few days ago.

ITV will be very happy with The Krypton Factor, hopefully this will encourage them to schedule better stuff against EE.
Good night for BBC1, poor everywhere else

Doesn't bode well. The other day on E4 the same special could only muster some 200k or so.

That is a staggering performance by BBC1 - won every slot from 3.50pm onwards.

When was Emmerdale last beaten by a repeat? I'm sure many of the 7.2m who watched W&G were getting a second dose after enjoying the first showing, but that is still fantastic - although I did speculate a few days ago that it wasn't beyond the realms of possibility that the W&G repeat would win the slot. Probably boosted, to be fair, by people switching over from Emmerdale to EastEnders.

And Jonathan Creek surpassed expectations there. It was a difficult episode but to get 9m over the two hours must surely now ensure another series of this - it's outperformed much of the last series shown in 2003/4!

And of course, it will be reasonably well placed in the Top 40 of 2009.

The X Factor repeats never pulled 7m viewers, did they George...?

It was a good idea to air this first on New Year's Day but can't see it holding onto that figure next week when there'll be a lot less viewers available.

2m daytime is probably equivalent to about 6m peaktime.

Well I remember you criticising TV Burp for focussing too much on TXF so if you count that as a "repeat" more or less (with Harry's added commentary for good measure), then yes!

That's right, though Corrie was at something of a low ebb at the time, everyone was slagging off the crap storylines and characters - it was just before Brian Park's big revamp.

Also, BBC1 didn't collapse on Sundays, I remember on one of the first weeks with Sunday Corrie, BBC1 showed Beethoven - for about the third time - at 8pm, and it thrashed ITV, it got about ten million viewers.

When the Monday 'stEnders started, a few weeks in they took it off on Bank Holiday Monday for Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and the Beeb said they never said it was going to be on every Monday and this was a special day which demnaded special programming. Wouldn't do that now.

Well done to BBC1 - the PTB realised they had a huge captive audience of people staying in nursing their hangovers and came up with the goods. The Wallace and Gromit repeat was actually very cleverly scheduled - there will have been people tuning in for the first time to see what all the fuss was about, plus those who were watching it for a second time to pick up all the little visual jokes they might have missed on the first viewing.

Great ratings for BBC1 yesterday with everything apart from EE performing better than expected. With high ratings for Creek, W&G, Mastermind I would have expected better from EE, but it seems ITV's programming dented EE somewhat.

Apart from The Krypton Factor it was a pretty poor day for ITV, with Marple very low and Emmerdale beaten by a W&G repeat. It's pleasing to see The Krypton Factor do well as hopefully it will encourage ITV to stop the Emmerdale clashes and show alternative programming. With The Krypton Factor getting 4.3m against EE, who knows what it could have got on a Saturday evening following BGT-6/7m?

Overall some very strong ratings there and a huge amount of people watching TV!

Yes, I remember the Monday EE debacle - the tabloids seized on it and used it as evidence that the Monday episode wasn't working.

Yeah, the first series was on Saturday nights at 9pm in summer 1995, then this second run was on Fridays, usually at 10pm, but during the Olympics at 9.30. As I recall there was then a two year gap before it finally returned in 1998, when it was now on at around 11pm.

Mention of Paddington Green there, that was a show that fell out of favour - the first series was on twice a week at 9.30, the second once a week at 10.30. But it carried on for ages, about three years, but the final series was on around 11pm, and I'm sure one of the final episodes was on after midnight.
