Hi guys, anyone worked for a phone company or know this sort of thing?

1. If I lose my iPhone and then sneakily insure it, and then 2 weeks later say it's lost will I get away with it??

2. If I buy a replacement phone on eBay do I simply need to make sure it's "unlocked" then I can use it normally with my new sim/old number??

Thanks

1/ is Fraud. And if you do get caught that will have serious consequences. Don't even go there. I suspect the insurance companies are well aware that there are people willing to try this fraud on and will look very closely at any claim made very soon after taking out a policy.

Claiming insurance very shortly after buying a policy is a red flag, they will investigate.

I'm sure the first thing they'd do is contract the network to find out when it last connected. Don't iPhones have a location app installed?

Need to be careful with Ebay phones. Lots of cases of people selling phones there and a couple of weeks after they've been paid reporting it lost/stolen then making an insurance claim. Phone then gets locked and buyer left with a brick.

If the phone is genuine and unlocked then you can stuff a compatible SIM in and it ought to work. And if you have asked the SIM provider to port your number over to the SIM then you'll also have your old number. By default if you buy a SIM you'll get a new number unless you make sure it's configured with your old one.

But be aware. And this goes back to point 1 in your OP. There are scams about where some unscrupulous so and so sells a phone then once they've got your cash report sthe phone lost/stolen. The service provider then blocks the phone so it's useless to you and the scammer claims another wedge of cash from the insurers!

regards the eBay scam surely anyone with a decent seller rating can be trusted most likely as if 1 reviews says it's a scam that user account is finished surely

Yeah read ratings and reviews. If they have a good history then you should be OK. Just be wary of things that are too cheap (as compared to most other sellers) as there's usually a catch.

turns out my phone is registered on Yorkshire Bank house insurance but not registered with IMEI with them or anything. Should that matter?

Thats why its important before bidding to ask if it will come with a receipt. Hard to claim it was stolen/lost then.

Also dont leave feedback for a good while.

Put a claim in and see what happens. Although i know my daughters bank requires you to register it with the IMEI number.

Not really, I bought a phone off a seller with over 350 feedback and 100% feedback that had been blacklisted
