Have you tried holding down the home button and the power button at the same time? Hold for several seconds and the tablet should reboot (Apple logo will appear)

The Home button is on the screen surround, in the centre of one of the short sides. It has a square with rounded corners printed on it.

You need to reset your iPad. To do this you need to hold down the button on the side, the one you mentioned but at the same time hold down the round button that is on the bezel, it has a square box drawn in the middle of it.

Hold both down together until your iPad goes off and the Apple logo appears.

This reset is similar to pulling the battery which of course you can't do.

Yes that is how you power on/off the iPad. Rodney McKay's post was about doing a reset on the iPad to see if that makes the iPad respond correctly again.

Your response made it sound as if you didn't know what the Home button was.

Pressing and holding the Power and Home buttons together forces the iPad to shutdown and restart. That might clear any software glitch that is making the iPad misbehave.
