The majority of the people on this forum think that if there is a young character, they're immediately bad. A lot of the young characters are good characters at the moment, so it annoys me when people on here single out a few bad young characters as the whole of the young characters. Oh, but it was fine to have young characters when the show first started? I think it's actually more to do with a lot of the FM's wanting no young characters whatsoever as they are a lot older.

I agree with you, there are just as much, if not more bad older characters than bad younger characters.

A lot of the younger characters are great like Lauren, Peter, Lucy, Abi, Jay and Whitney. Then there are the not so good youngsters like Dexter, Joey and Fatboy.

Some of them are good others average and then there are the ones who are just plain crap.

I know the girl who plays Abi gets a lot of stick on here, but I actually think she's improved a lot over time. The red button episodes where she went to find Dot were lovely and are what changed my opinion of her and it was the point I started to like the character. Yes, she has the annoying trait of half laughing her lines, but I think she deserves credit for the improvement she has made in the last couple of years or so.

Also really like Hetti Bywater, another who gets a hard time on here. I think her interpretation of Lucy is much better than the previous actress who I couldn't stand. A lot of people took a while to accept her as the new Lucy but I liked her instantly to be honest.

Peter Beale has been a good addition to the show, but I thought the previous actor was fine too.

Lola is quite popular on here anyway and it's clear to see why as she's really shone in some of her storylines.

Whitney is played by a decent enough actress, but the character isn't always given the best material.

The worst one out of the young cast members is Jacqueline Jossa. A terrible actress and a terrible character in my opinion.

Precisely. I actually quite like Abi and now Lauren too.

The majority of the ones I dislike are either gone or on their way out. Why all these generalisations today, with phrases like "the majority of users?"

EDIT: remove Tiffany from my list, I'm speaking more in terms of teens/young adults.

Hated Sonia.

This year's camping trip was, IMO, far better than the one with the contrived lesbian kiss between Zoe and Kelly.

Must admit I agree it was so silly. Spencer sick in the bus and then the accident. Very boring.

Lola and Peter are the only two good watchable young ones in that show!

The rest are rubbish!

Yes, and we had the dire Ferreira storyline too. I'd much rather put up with Fatboy's jokes and Tamwar's misery than have them back that's for sure!

DS posters just can't win with some people .

On a serious note, I like to think of myself as a young person too (I'm 22), but I dislike most of the teens/young adults on the show. The only one I find likeable is Peter really. Lola and Abi are okay, but I'm indifferent toward them (sometimes I like them, sometimes I loathe them). Lucy, Fatboy, Dexter, Joey and Lauren are all just plain annoying. Whitney can be likeable and a good character, but I find myself rolling my eyes at her (her recent treatment of David is strange to say the least and very judgemental).
Blame the writing for these badly-written youngsters. Maybe if they were written better, people would like them more.

In terms of acting ability, Peter, Lola and Whitney are the only ones that can act naturally. The rest are not good enough IMO.

Debatable...

Onto the subject at hand, I agree. So many FMs hate teens in soaps. I don't know why, most of them really aren't bad characters at all.

That is a he'll of a sweeping statement. There are plenty of younger characters that I like now - I very much Lucy, Lola, Peter and Jay and always have done. I also like Poppy, Alice and Tamwar and again i've liked Tam since the start when he was about 15? I don't basically mind Lauren but I dislike her being constantly pushed to the forefront at the expense of other characters. I'm not so keen on Whitney, Joey and Dexter. As always, there are some younger characters that I like and some that I don't. When it started I liked Sharon, Michelle and Ian and wasn't so keen on Kelvin and Mark. I liked Diane Butcher but not Ricky. Janine but not Sonia or Jamie. Do you see?

My issue is when the teens dominate the show. If I wanted to watch a teen dominated drama I'd watch Waterloo Road and I was the same in my teens (though back then it was Grange Hill).

They really don't dominate the show. Another mass exaggeration on this forum. They get as much screen time as the older characters, probably less. The only youngster (Not even young) that has over-dominated the show is Lauren.

I'm not sure that is true. I liked Sonia as a child but found the love story with Jamie very tiresome but again, she was another character who they pushed too much to thr forefront once the actress started getting recognition.

I don't like older characters dominating either like Kat, Tanya even Sharon at points in the past.

Lauren has recently and there was definitely a stage last year when there were about 12 characters under the age of 21 and only 4 over the age of 50 which is not an accurate representation of the age demographic of this country, London or the viewers.

Phil, Billy, Patrick, Jean! Cora over 50 so 5 - sorry
Ben, Jay, Alice, Fats, Poppy, Lucy, Lauren, Abi, Tamwar, Whitney, Tyler, Lola - not to mention the near teens like Tiffany, Bobby.

This as I say was last year and they have addressed that balance somewhat now with Ava, David, Carol, Sam though they are still sadly lacking in the above 60 area.

Lauren is only 19. Like it or not that is deemed young by most viewers. I can assure you that whilst they had their fair share of plots, Sharon and Michelle weren't central to the show in the way that Lauren is at 19. A couple of years later - about 21 with the Mitchells coming in they started giving her real 'grown up' storylines.

Nope. As long as the writing and casting continues to be as bad as it is for this demographic, they will not win. I'd go into detail why, but would ask you to refer to my earlier posts.

And I'm 21 and all for younger characters. I really am. Hell, I loved Skins. But not that lot. They are awful and are bringing the show down. Horribly.

The young actors in the show I like Lorna Fitzgerald, Jacqueline Jossa, Shona McGarthy, Khali Best, Massie Smith and Danielle Harold

Mimi Keene and Ben Hardy are growing on me though.

Most of them are shit OP!

I do blame the bad writing mainly though. Tiffany used to be great. Whitney was good also.

Abi is probably one of the best young stars of any of the soaps though in my opinion. She is sooo much like Tanya, it was brilliant casting.

I'd be happy to see most of the young characters written out. I'm sick of the sight of them.
