Basically with a tablet you just need a simple touch friendly app launcher. It's all about the apps really which is where iOS has the advantage in the tablet world still.

I don't think you can generalise like that, you may well be happy simple app launcher like ios, but others may prefer the "user experience" of having an os than can do more.

The correct phrase is 'all I need is a simple app launcher' then.

I'll buy an ipad when it has:-

Built in USB with the ability to export as well as import all file types (without the need to jailbreak).
Built in HDMI
SD/MicroSD card slot, again with import and export ability
16:9 or 16:10 display, 4:3 is so 1990's!
Ability to connect to an external keyboard which doubles up as an additional battery and provides additional ports.
Until then I will stick with my ASUS Transformer Prime.

I had the 4:3 argument here a few weeks ago. Apple fans seriously think it's the best way of watching TV and movies. Of course it will remain so until Apple ditch it.

Without rehashing the arguements again; I have an iPad and a 16:9 tablet, but the iPad works much better as a portrait device whereas the 16:9 tablet seems very off on portrait mode.

Using Airplay is vastly superior to having a HDMI port, and no frickin cable dragging from the tablet and you can carry on using the tablet for something else while it beams iPlayer or Netflix or Youtube to your TV.

I've got no axe to grind, but I bought my iPad 2 simply because it did "feel" a better device in the shop. That was 18 months ago, and I've been reading about all the new tablets. When buying a new device, I would do exactly the same thing again, try the different tablets in the shop and make a judgement on how they felt to use.
Obviously price comes into it, but I wouldn't buy something just because it appeared to have better specs for the money. We all know from buying any retail item that the specs don't tell the whole story of the user experience. Some things have earned their reputation as being just more pleasant to use. Perhaps Apple products just fall into that category ? But I'm no Apple fanboy and I'm quite prepared to be convinced otherwise. I just wondered, if all the tablets (in their different size range) were exactly the same price, what tablet would posters choose ? |

Airplay allows me to stream YouTube (for example) via Apple TV, in HD, whilst typing this out in Safari. That would be multitasking, which I'm told the iPad can't do. |

That doesn't have a name on my tab. It's just an option. When I play a video there's an option to play it on the tablet or to send the video to any dlna devices on my network such as my wdtv or a smart tv. I thought airplay was a mirroring thing like hdmi out but without the wires.

Interestingly, I just tried the Airplay/Youtube/multitask thing on my iPad 1 - it works flawlessly which is fairly astounding given that device's limitations. |

If they have any intelligence they would go with what felt best to them. Sadly there are quite a few people on here who would only go with what brand is popular rather than what is best for them.

I suppose it's horses for courses, but I can't think of an app I use in portrait mode on my 16:10 tablet, all seem to function fine in landscape.

Depends what you are classing as surpassed ?
The new iPad mini (from what I have read)- - has caught up with the latest Android screens (surpassed the N7 perhaps by 3 pixels per inch if you are into that degree of willy-waving )- is still heavier than the N7 (in fact its heavier than the previous mini isnt it ?) - performance - i guess we will wait and see - raw functionality - iOS is still behind Android in features but thats the os rather than the tablet which parts do you think have surpassed ? (genuine question )All this for a unit that is hugely more expensive ? I did notice they have kept the fingerprint thingy as next years upgrade Apple do like to keep their tablets one step behind their phones. saves innovating i guess ![]() |

There is absolutely no way that iOS is inherently better at anything than Android.

Airplay. AirDrop. AirPrint. Touch ID. MIDI support baked into the OS.

'Best screen on the market', and as usual the Mail writes up very well putting in real points. What is interesting is that there have been few claims so far for the iPad screen. Has the trend with the Mini for going downmarket continued the Disappointment there? |

I'm sure performance will be better as it has the same processor as the iPhone 5S, which trumps the majority of the top end android phones. Isn't the processor in the nexus 7 2013 inferior to those in the top android devices (although still very good)?
![]() The new N7 processor is pretty good - especially for something thats about half the price of an equivalent iPad mini ? |

Android is capable of all of this except for native MIDI support, though it does support MIDI in certain configurations.

I didn't say Android couldn't do these things - it's just that it's simply not true to say that iOS doesn't do anything 'inherently better' than Android.
With Apple you need a separate 'box' that is then wired to your TV in order to stream from an iPad/iPhone ? With Android you can stream to/from any DLNA enabled device with no wires involved at all. Whilst both work fine I cant see that anyone could argue that the Apple route is better than using globally accepted standards ?? Thousands of DLNA devices vs Apple TV ...... |

It has a fancy name though. "Airplay" on Apple. On my tablet it just does like you say to any dlna device, be that console, mediaplayer, pc or smart tv. It's not called anything it just does it.
