I have an iPad 4 and I hear its being discontinued now iPad Air has been announced. I've only had it a few months but does this mean I won't be able to update it or buy accessories such as coves/casings etc for it in the future?

Of course you will! There are enough of them out there for it being worth manufacturers while to support them with cases/covers/leads etc. for many years to come. Apple itself supports all previous models with software updates except (just recently) for the original iPad1 (which is not supported for IOS7 - but IOS 6 could be re-installed if required) - and almost all Apps will run across the range (developers would be crazy to just target the iPad AIr)
We've gone from Ipad 1 to 4 and now on Ipad Air very soon. Ipads 3 and 4 came and went, but the Ipad 2 (in 16Gb form) is still listed and sold as a current model. Does anybody know why it has been kept on and not discontinued?

Because the 2 sells well and is cheap to make due to lack of retina display with a high profit margin.

It is very popular in schools (more so in the US??) and many business applications for iPads are built for it.
