Could not activate mobile data network message?

So my iPhone 5 is unlocked and I'm trying out a EE sim (previously phone was set as Vodafone) anyway managed to get the EE SIM working and making calls etc, but I can't get the internet/data working. When I try and load a webpage I get the message "could not activate data network" and underneath that it says "you are not subscribed to a data service".

Any suggestions? I've done a reset all network settings and that hasn't helped.

It should just work. Check in Settings->General->About to see if the carrier is showing as EE, if not reboot the phone. (Hold down the top button and the home button at the same time until you see apple logo then let go).

It's showing as EE as the carrier. Tried the reboot and it's still the same. There is an EE store nearby might just pop in and see what they say.

Still having no luck with this. EE in store were useless and just told me to ring 150. Tried hard reboot, done a restore from iTunes, a restore from iCloud, have reset all network settings. Only time it works was when I set up as a new phone but as soon as I restore a back up I'm back to no data. Clearly something in the backup is holding on to the Vodafone settings for data (as soon as the Vodafone sim goes back in I've got data again). Anyone?

Is your iOS upto date?

I am puzzled too as an official unlock or sim free should be fine. I've had every network in my iPhone all work fine as carrier settings are there from apple.

Fixed it. If someone is having a similar issue, I went to iPhone APN changer website unlockit.co.nz and when I selected the option to send the correct APN setting and when I clicked to do it, it said to delete the current profile first, so I went into settings it was already open in that area and I could see my old Vodafone WAP certificate/profile. Deleted that and rebooted and it worked.

What is laughable is that EE didn't suggest this. I only found out about the APN changer site because I popped into Virgin mobile (to see if one of their sims would give me data) and explained the issue and right away the guy said try unlockit.co.nz

What carrier did you select given that that website doesn't have EE? The closest I would suggest is T-Mobile.

Also, I don't have any profiles other than my Sky wi-fi profile and have never had any issues with data...

What is laughable about this is that Vodafone set up a profile for their network. iOS profiles are for companies to set up security information - not designed for networks to send APN configuration.

Vodafone is the only UK operator to not follow Apple's design directions - and I've had 2 iPhones with Vodafone corporate (through work) and neither of them have had profiles.

When you put an O2, EE or Three SIM into an iPhone the carrier bundle in the iOS sets the APN settings for you. You'll find the APN option under Mobile isn't available. On Vodafone they let you change this stuff as they can't be bothered to work with Apple to make their users life easier :-/
