Do bands still smash up their their instruments on set?
Does this still happen as a mark of teenage/authoritarian rebellion or are they nicely homed and groomed (like One Direction, Beiber etc) by their management, nowadays?

No because they cost a lot of money now, they only smash them (or monitors) if the sound is shite then they give it to their guitar/drum/bass tech to repair or cash to buy a replacement, also a lot of them are endorsed which means if they have a signature custom instrument or prototype from that company they'll get another one delivered at request.

The guitars that The Who were smashing in 1970 were £205 retail (a lot of money back then). And the set neck made them less likely to be repairable....
I read an interview with Richie Blackmore's guitar tech once. He said Richie cared far too much for his guitars to smash them on stage, it was always a cheap replica that was smashed. |

Why would you smash your guitar? Shouldn't musicians value their instruments? I know they have a lot of money, but surely they should appreciate the hard work that goes into making it? Hmmm...

If you see a band on the last date of the tour, thats when they will usually smash the instruments.

Some bands do, nobody really does it as a "trademark" kind of thing but I've seen a few bands get caught up in the moment at the end of gigs and smash stuff. I've seen The Cribs break stuff a few times and a few times I've seen Pete Doherty live something has got broken (although not always intentionally). I recall one Babyshambles gig where after launching a guitar, half of the drum kit ended up in the audience. As we were leaving the venue the guy in front of me was carrying a cymbal out, complete with stand! The bouncer took it off him though!
